Hello to all Suunto 7 owners, I wanted to open this discussion to understand if it is possible to improve the autonomy of our S7. My question is this: How does Airplane Mode affect S7 functions. Having a battery consumption not in line with the characteristics indicated by Suunto, I read of a user who often used the airplane mode to save battery having a final autonomy of 4 days. I tried it at night from 23-7 so 8 total hours, however, having a consumption of 10% of the battery with WiFi off and screen without wake on. Thanks to those who want to answer my question.

@luca760101 which watch face do you use? In my experience that’s a big impact on the battery, especially if you have the tilt to wake on

I tried different faces from the suunto ones to the ones that use the 3100 coprocessor. However I have both tilt wake on always off. I thought that at least in airplane mode the consumption was almost zero, instead it is not so, at least for me.

In any mode that I use, whether aerial or normal (bluetooth and NFC only, WiFi off), the first two items of battery consumption are always INACTIVE CLOCK and BLUETOOTH

@luca760101 I don’t know what to tell, I’m really no expert. I noticed the google fit watch face was the best battery wise, and with airplane mode on and screen off (incl tilt to wake off) I have 3% battery usage for 4h, so 6% for a 8 hours night.

Clearly this is why your battery consumption is “not inline with the characteristics of Suunto.” Perhaps it is the apps you are using and not Suunto. I have extra apps installed but use a Suunto watch face. Here is my consumption that is totally in agreement with specs.

I’m obviously talking about using the only watch with a smartwatch function, without GPS activity (covid-19) and putting the watch in airplane mode at night. Otherwise it would last much less. I don’t use apps other than the pre-installed ones, I use Suunto watch faces. If we want to talk about autonomy in GPS sports, better leave it alone. With almost maximum charge I do not go beyond 4h30. I don’t think these are the Suunto specs.

@luca760101 There is clearly something wrong, I recently ran for 7h 3 min and had 18% of my battery left, which lasted the entire rest of the day. You should be getting much more than 4:30. For this I did have airplane mode on, but I usually don’t use airplane mode and have several runs in the 5-6h range.

So, from your experience, do you confirm that in order to achieve the autonomy indicated by Suunto of 12 hours in sports, it is essential that S7 is in airplane mode?

Some sports will get 12h, I think cycling can do 12h or even a little more. For running and trail running in my experience 10h is probably the max I can squeeze out of the watch and that does require airplane mode and not much interaction with the watch. Others seem to do better than me, for my trail run today the estimate was 7h. I run trails and this may be harder on the battery due to the uneven hand movements.

Yes, I followed it, I don’t share the opinions of some optimistic users. Of course if you buy a smartwatch and then most of the day you use it in airplane mode (therefore like a normal watch) I don’t know how it makes sense to boast of the battery life.

Do you meant to reactivate screen too often…right?

I use it in activities for ski mountaineering and trail running, if the hand moves, certainly not as in cycling which is stationary on the handlebar. Then I don’t often watch the watch but we are still talking about a watch designed for sports, or am I wrong?

@luca760101 there’s nothing optimistic about facts. Everyone uses the watch to match his own requirements. If yours are not met with the Suunto 7, buy another watch

Of course it is a smartwatch, with all the merits and defects of the case, and wearing it in airplane mode does not make much sense, but if you need greater autonomy, you can also go down to these compromises.

Without any controversy, I don’t think you do 6-8-10 hour activities every day (if yes, you actually bought the wrong watch), and I don’t think you are very interested in notifications while doing that type of activity.

I do not accept this type of answer at all, I have always been a happy owner of Suunto, I have purchased at least 6 of the various series, I do not know how many you have bought that you pronounce in this way. If I bought the 7 selling from Spartan, it means that I believed in Suunto and in what it stated in the watch’s specifications. Since, as well as you who are so sure of your purchase, I took it in pre-order, or when nobody owned one to possibly read the various user feedbacks. Therefore I invested my 479 euros placing full trust in the Finnish brand and I don’t understand how I should settle for performances not in line with what was declared. In addition, the Suunto home one month after my purchase no longer gives me the opportunity to return the watch (the withdrawal time is a maximum of 15 days). So, not finding the money on the street, why should I buy another watch? I expect you to answer me … in a sensible way, not with sentences made.
