but to be honest: if you stop comparing you’ll find your inner peace with S9B and start loving it
the reason is: there are so much more important things than mm precision of GPS… e.g. a working fridge with cold beer on a hot summer night… cheers fellas

I hope next gen does not rely as much on algorithm filtering for position but in higher quality signal. You can’t have both battery life and precision. And thats why I am keeping both.

battery of S9B is much smaller than A3PS from the capacity… hence it has to have the compromise to save energy somewhere… -
@TELE-HO it’s the same with cell phones nowadays. You can do everything with them but no one uses them to ring people. You can do everything with the s9, but just the a3p is the real gps watch with the Sirf antenna

@lexterm77 I don’t know how these were compared but unless they were worn on the same arm on the same day the comparison is not a reasonable one. The GPS signals can differ and if worn on opposite arms that can make quite a bit of difference too. So, how were these two images generated?

Same arm, one day difference. I have about 40 activities that match this small climb to what used to be a rail bridge over river, stairs are narrow. Sample size is small nevertheless evidence is emerging that all my S9B activities are zig zag if you zoom in, regardless of years or months recoded. All my Ambit routes are smoother, and closer to the stairs on satellite image.
This is signal to noise ratio showing the cost of having low power chip does impact quality if signal. Specs are actually published by semiconductor manufacturers in their technical specifications, can’t find the link but at some point I will compare them just for fun
There is no such thing as a free lunch, Ambits have 500mAh battery S9B 250mAh if I remember correctly.
Ambit3 antenna is overkill, I just can’t stop admiring its conservative engineering where “good enough” is just not good enough. -
You are kidding right ? What’s not good enough about it. Are you a chartographer or something ?
We are getting out of scope here let’s move on a correct thread and not polute here.
Sure many a3p fans will dig out tracks that have nice precision but real testing tells otherwise.
I have a huge db of tracks and not only me, Suunto and testers etc.
That said I am personally tired about this thread popping up in each irrelevant thread.
Somehow it feels like humans won’t ever be satisfied and they always need football teams arguments while being a couch coach.

Well, the “stripping” of the movescount site and the re-branding to something like “Ambit Link” could be also made to the mobile app without so much cost for support.
As also said many times before, the only thing that matters is money/monetization, but if Suunto counts the so many angry loyal customers who won’t trust Suunto to put their money in it’s next watch flagship, maybe it evens up (or down?).

@mlakis That is my case, clearly. Since my Ambit 2, I never thought of changing to another brand. Muy trust, however, has been so eroded with the Suunto attitude, that I am considering a competitor, rather than buying a S9B. And not fo the fancy/useless things, S9B is a hell of a watch for my purposes.

When riding a couple of mountainbike laps with the Ambit 3 Peak, there is some obvious deviation too. Nothing to worry about, it isn’t like I don’t know where I’ve been. It is merely to get an impression of which sections were tough and in which lap, rather than for it to be pinpoint accurate.

Then why not buy an S9B??? It is a great watch and is still undergoing updates. The recent improvements to the app show that Suunto is very interested in leveraging their fantastic heat maps and routes to SA, IMHO better than present in MC. On iOS it was not possible to use a web browser and get routes to work, I had to use a PC. I love the new iOS features on SA. My wish is that we get offline downloadable routes and maps for an area we designate…that would be killer and no other sports watch manufacturer has this.

Afaik atm there won’t be any support for Bluetooth sync of settings / routes with the SUUNTO app for A3 etc.
There will be a new website and that will sync only with cable and will be enabled only for A3 etc.

If you read the announcements that is also said there. A3 etc will sync only via cable.

Thanks for clearing it up. It is people that do good job like you that somehow we (users) clean the bad idea from brands.
As others said it sucks big time to not be able to change sports profiles on the go and upload routes.
But I understand suunto…it is an old watch…mostly indusctrible one, and won’t profit the brand.
I guess, sometimes the brands should see it the other way around. Most Ambit users won’t buy any suunto and won’t recomend any suunto. For sure new ones will come…business is like that…
Also, given that you still sell the ambit 3…it could be a good opportunity to have a killer watch at a killer price.
I guess there aren’t many watches with: power meter support, navigation, good battery life in that price range…this…if suunto offered a good integration to suunto app.Once again, thanks for raising our voice.

We never had an on-the-go route creator for Ambits, unless you count mobile web browser which is somehow useless on a small display using touch (at least for me). We had to use a PC to plan route on Movescount website, sure you had the option to sync your route via bluetooth using the Movescount App and now you have to use the cable, this is the only drawback as I see.

I agree that even on the old Movescount platform, using a phone or iPad to create a route wasn’t easy and for the most point not really all that possible/practical. But, you could still create a POI, and then the MC mobile app could sync it to the watch. Now, that will definitely not be possible, and I don’t travel on my excursions w/ a laptop. So for that use-case there is no option currently but the Ambit/Traverse product line where can manually input GPS coordinates from a phone app or map. Until Suunto adds POI to the Suunto App. Once that comes, I can consider moving to a new watch, until then, long live the A3P I guess. Hobbled but functional.
Still don’t know that I’ll switch, because without a firmware update and the ability to manually enter coordinates, if you don’t have cell service in the backcountry or offline maps in SA, still hobbled on the new watches. They are for sport, not really for backcountry use.

Actually, @Dimitrios-Kanellopoulos - this could be interesting. Firmware update on A3P to create POIs on the watch, manually entering coordinates. But I know…we are not going to see another A3P firmware update…does not make sense from a business perspective. If only the code was open source
some clever person could add it… -
@tomhaegler you actually can do that with a3p right now. AFAIK no other more recent suunto watch support this.
