Battery Issue when Paused

I think there is a bug/feature issue when you pause an activity. From what I can see it continous to track everything in the background - can sort of understand HR maybe, but can’t understand why it continous to track GPS - there is a reason I have put it pause.
Due to this when I pause and pop into a shop to pick up some items, GPS continous to try and track, and as it can’t fix, well you can imagine what it does to battery life. That 10-15 mins in a shop can chew through more battery than my 1 hour tracked session.
Surely the GPS can be turned off when we pause an activity, to save battery life. Can see why keeping GPS tracking is a better option than not, when you consider the variety of reasons for pausing - i.e. you don’t want that section tracked!.

@jamie-bg I believe other Suunto watches in the S line do the same. The S9 will also adjust altitude with FusedAlti during a pause.

So, thinking about this I believe this is not a bug but a clear design decision from Suunto. If pause would stop the sensors, you would need time to reacquire GPS, HR, etc. after each break, and that would be a disaster for most users. Better would be to have a long kind of break that disables everything, similar to Garmin’s “resume later” option, and leave the current pause as it is.

And…this is solved by just starting another activity if the pause is sufficiently long. I see this as a rather low priority issue compared to having auto pause or customizable HR zones, disabling auto lap, etc.

It was clearly this for SSU at least.
Those who need to keep battery during long pause without stopping activity, need to des activate GPS during pause, and activate it manually again after pause. I don’t know if it is the same for S7.

@mff73 no convient option to do this in S7 - very automtated from this perspective.

@jamie-bg This is a drawback but also according to design for all suuntos.

Drawback -> Pause and go indoors. GPS powers fully and wastes battery

Benefit -> No wait for GPS lock , still can use maps , still can see speed etc.

@dimitrios-kanellopoulos - maybe if paused the GPS fix setting could change to a quick check every 1/2 mins and if no fix after 10s stops trying - that would significantly improve battery life, especially from it continously trying to fix.

And or maybe if app paused and in background - no GPS.
If running and in background GPS remains active?
Not sure how feasible any of these options are - but would think they are worth a consideration, especially considering the target market.
