@jsuarez Not all that well and I always had problems with routes, on a Mac they were problematic, especially long routes. Many times they never worked and that was frustrating.

@brad_olwin Then that part clearly needed rework. No wonder you are happy with the new system.

@brad_olwin Yes, I see your point.

But if you are going to buy a new watch and you would choose between two brands one of them with a complete web site analysis with beautiful graphs and the other with only mobile graphs and depending on 3rd parties, what would you choose???

I think the answer is obvious.

Personally, I think the Garmin graphs are pretty useless on their web site, Coros doesn’t have a website so that leaves Polar, who doesn’t have navigation. I don’t need beautiful graphs, in fact the graphs on TrainingPeaks are not that great, but the analysis and planning are first rate. So yes, my choice is obvious and I went from an Ambit3P to a Spartan Ultra (which was a mistake) and then to the S9 baro (the latter as it is perfect for ultra marathons and SkiMo), the two sports I most commonly engage in.

Not all needs are the same.
Almost only used movescount for changing setting and apps.
I always prefered to make cycling routes on ridewithgps and now komoot (both are said to “partner” with suunto app to have integration).
Regarding training analysis, material followup I did it offline with Sporttracks, but with Suunto App I discovered runalyze and it fulfil my needs. It is almost all in one.
Each one has different preferences and needs.

@andré-faria Of course, you can use 3rd parties or even you can download the data and use a graphic PC program (Excel for example) to do your own analysis.
In fact, I can translate all my Suunto apps to Excel and make whatever I want as graphs, comparison between Moves, weekly summaries, etc.
But it is a matter of comfort to have all this possibilities in the same web site of your watch brand. And personally I prefer a better web site that a mobile app but I understand that not everybody thinks the same thing.

New Suunto App has a very good point because it compares routes with the same path and put it in order by time. But I you want to look inside some of this moves individually then with the mobile app it is not comfortable. The uses of tabs in a website is be better.

Not really, the implementation is poor. More difficult to draw, no heatmaps and more difficult to use on the watch.

With that said, suunto apps route planning tool is really great.

@cosmecosta True, Coros doesn’t have a web platform (though they said something on Instagram a while back which led me to think they might be developing one, which would be nice). However, the difference is that I knew this going in; I didn’t buy a watch partly in order to be able to use a specific platform only to have that platform pulled out from under me, which is what happened with Suunto.

The other difference is that I’ve been a happy Stryd user for the past year or so and PowerCenter gives me a lot of the web-based analysis tools that I want, so the native platform (any platform) of my watch is less important to me than it was when I bought the Spartan. If this weren’t the case I’m pretty sure I’d have opted for Polar or Garmin rather than Coros.

And yes, I’m aware that Spartan users are still better off than Ambit users. For the former, not having Movescount is merely an annoyance. For the latter it significantly impacts the functionality of the hardware. Which is even less acceptable in my view and is one of the reasons I’m not willing to throw any more money at Suunto.

Correct, I was wrong and should have made that clear. Is V2 still using in house routes? My understanding is they were ceasing that and moving to 3rd parties but I have not kept up.

I use Microsoft Power BI to analyze my workout and to create some nice visuals from the training data. I am quite happy with the result.

I liked MC when it was available, but when I read that it was going to cease I pretty much stopped using it. Have just been using the SA on my iPhone since then and it’s been fine, gives me all the data I need and not much that I don’t

Agreed. I find it amazing how people like to get screwed and stick to the same brands. To me Suunto signed their death sentence with this, just like GoPro did some years ago with their invasive app.

I’m going to keep using my 8+ years old Ambit 2 of course, as I always have, downloading the gpx files from my watch into my computer, with openambit 😃

And in a future hopefully far far away, when it finally breaks, I’ll remember this decision of theirs and make sure I get another brand that respects people’s privacy. Options may seem scarce, but there is a market and there are still people that see the importance of this.

Good luck to find support with software from over 8 years…

I would like to add some perspective. The last decade had been a big change in a industry, not only in GPS I’m talking about software/hardware. Bluetooth is in the version 6… wifi had evolved from b to ac… About 9 years ago a phone wasn’t what is today… the iPad was launched in the 2010 if I recall well.

So choose whatever you want, find a brand who will offer a discount to upgrade and a good watch.

For a user of ambit 2 what changed ? Not being able to log apps?
Can you elaborate on the privacy issues? I am not aware.

Although, specially for ambit 3 users, we were “screwed” loosing some features, I see it as a new start for a brand. If it is the start that I imagine/want right now? Maybe not, but it is not my brand. And in fact they may be starting something different and in the long run “better”.
As users we always want full support, full compatibility, spare parts , etc
But that comes at a cost to the brands that may not be sustainable .
Even today we see updates on suunto app beta for iOS regarding the traverse, so they didn’t stop caring, it is just not on their priority.
                                            They have resources to manage.
On my side I prefer to invest on a brand that “screw” a bit their past but work on a better future than one that at the cost of supporting old technology doesn’t innovate on certain parts.
