@dimitrios-kanellopoulos Are there data on the loss of autonomy according to the choices offered?

@rob33 @dimitrios-kanellopoulos same problem…with simple movement on run (e.g. skipping) lights on very frequently(without turn wrist)
kinda bug or just high sensitivity…??
        everything else perfect.
        (s9 non baro.)

(Raise to wake mode test: the lighting comes on very frequently only with the usual arm movements of running …
        Similar experiences?)

@gerasimos It seems that many people wonder about this function … Lack of explanation?

@rob33 its a very useful and new function, need more time and daily tests from customers to check out …
Just little patience and feedbacks and experts will solve it…(if it’s real problem and not an isolated issue)

@gerasimos Dimitrios already said he’s collecting feedback for Suunto on the backlight behavior 🤟

I’ll add my two bits of feedback on this feature too - last night, while putting the kids to sleep, the light kept coming on. I’m on S9Baro, backlight off, standby on, raise to wake on. Let’s say that in last night’s scenario I can’t complain - the room was dark, it was 9pm, and it was working as expected.

However, with it being quite reactive/sensitive to hand movement, I am wondering if it wouldn’t make sense (at least for us on S9B without adaptive settings) to take into account the time of day (and probably day of year / location) as a heuristic to determine if backlight is really needed. I don’t need it to react, even at low intensity, at 10am, but I would need it at 7am in winter months here in Europe.

@radu-negoescu use DND. Same applies to s9p.

                  I use DND from 9pm to 7am

Like garmin with “after sunset” mode for backlight?

@radu-negoescu I use automatic Do Not Disturb setting during near sleep time to morning wake up time. So raise to lit the screen do not disturb.

                          @gerasimos Same stuff here.
Tested on mountain biking (S9P on bike stand) and on Crossfit exercise (this sport mode is by the way missing!) the light keeps turning on when you don’t need it:

                          • twist/turn/tilt the handle bar = light turns on
                          • pick up the kettle bell from the floor = light turns on
                          • raise your wrist to look watch during circuit training = usually no light (noticed that if you do small “shake” on your hand and then raise the light is on).

So i think this needs more tuning.

Or ad option to switch on/off during exercise!? This is not helpful in all sport modes and situations. But i would like to use it for some or just only on watch mode.

i think with a quick double raise to open light or a finest tuning wiil be just perfect and usefull function…🤘 🤘 💪

@gerasimos This would be a terrible idea while exercising in the dark, especially for running. I do not want to have to lift my arm twice to see when an interval is over with.

I have another question regarding the backlight:
                                      Backlight: LOW
                                      Standby: OFF
                                      Raise to Wake: OFF

but the backlight is always on (tabbing does not work and switching ON/OFF via the quick menu also does not work)

Has anyone ideas how to fix this?

                                      thanks!

@theguyfromthesummit, @Tomas5 , @Dimitrios-Kanellopoulos, and others, is there any consensus on how to best use the combinations of Standby, Raise to Wake, DND, and Backlight?

On my S5, there are a weird combination of features and/or bugs and/or HW issues that lead to the following super-easy-to-reproduce observations in a newly factory reset and synced to android device:

                                        1. Raise to Wake never works, even after a factory reset and no additional settings changes, with any wrist movement

                                        2. Pressing any button will bring the backlight on at high brightness for 10 seconds

                                        3. Long pressing the top left button, when the backlight is on, will temporarily turn the backlight off, then it turns back on again

                                        4. DND has no effect on battery brightness, always very bright for 10 seconds

                                        5. Switching to Battery Saver will cause the backlight to turn off, no button press will turn it back on

                                        6. Turning on the Backlight from the middle right button long press will show the backlight for about 65-70 seconds, no button press after it it auto turns off ( 10 seconds after the screen goes to sleep from no movement )

So confusing, I want to like this feature, but I don’t understand how it works. Is the S9 and S9B behaving differently from the S5?

                                          1. Try to use it in dark room. It worked for me but i didn’t notice since it is so low intensity. Only visible in dark room.

                                          2. Unfortunatelly, after suunto removed toggle mode, it is like it is, i hate that every button, every notification etc enable backlight but sadly i can’t do anything about it.

                                          3. Well, maybe some residue after removed toggle mode.

                                          4. didn’t test

                                          5. didn’t test

                                          6. can’t reproduce

I still have hope that suunto will bring back toggle mode. It was feature documented in user manual, they took it away, thay removed it from user manual. I am very disapointed by this. It was my default mode in Ambit 2s, and It was my default mode in Suunto 5 until they removed it.

Quick update, I spent a week with the feature fully enabled and discovered much of my observation list items are just how the feature works, including:

                                            1. Raise to Wake will work eventually, but as @Tomas5 pointed out, you need to be in a dark room to see it. It also helps to follow @Brad_Olwin advice and give your wrist a little flick at the end of a purposeful wrist raise. It also helps to note that DND will disable raise to wake, so confirm your auto-DND setting before trying at night.

                                            2. ( Obviously ) By design to turn on backlight with any button press

                                            3. By design, this can be done in 2.14.16 with backlight in Automatic mode.

                                            4. This is a change in behavior, in 2.14.16, DND will set the backlight to a dimmer screen brightness

                                            5. This is a change in behavior, in 2.14.16, Power Saver mode will not affect backlight in Automatic or toggle mode.

                                            6. I think 2.16.28 is required for turning on a backlight from the long-press middle button menu. I could be wrong, here, so don’t flame this feedback if it is inaccurate.

I’ve reset the S5 to 2.14.16 and will spend the next week deciding if I absolutely require a manual toggle backlight. Trying not to be biased, but I think it’s a must have for my watch use and expected battery life.
