I have observed that if I activate instant HR measurment in watch mode about 5 minutes before activity, then initial readings at the start of activity are much faster and more precise. It’s like take time for soaking HR. Is it my perception or does it really work this way?
More tricks to improve reading? BTW in my wrist seems works well, with common errors like low spikes.

@valdis830 interesting, because on spartan trainer there is a spike to about 200bpm in first 5 minutes of running. Lots of posts about this online.

@Dimitrios-Kanellopoulos sounds like a firmware issue because the ohr does work OK in general. (well enough for me)

@Droro I have had them like that, but I have tried in this way and it seems to improve. Then I only wait about 20-30 seconds until the reading is fixed.

this warmup issue is known. Unfortunately it is a vallencell side story (their FW).

I have communicated this right now to Suunto.

Please keep me posted on this thread if that also solves other people’s issues (the suggestion of @valdis830 )

OK. It was just to check if you’ve seen improvements running the “instant” measurement additionally to 24/7

I have 24/7 enabled and usually “HR locking” takes (most of the times) less than 20 seconds and it is accurate enough from the beginning.

@sartoric I use 24/7 and it gives me good results specially during sleep. However, OHR for running really works bad for me, so I always use a belt. My watch is Spartan Sport WHR Baro.

It was funny one day that I forgot the belt and trained with OHR to find that I was supposedly warming up at 196bpm… 😂

I tried this long ago and for me OHR just does not work well…unless I run on pavement and it is relatively flat. I found out at a conference that OHR is good to great if run on pavement and am not running steep hills. But on trails it just doesn’t work. This is variable as for some it works well. Hopefully more work will get it functioning better!

@Brad_Olwin same experience . I would add also treadmill.

However, I have tattoos and really slim arms

@valdis830 thanks a million for this!!
I gave it a try today (=while preparing for my run, I activated the heart rate reading from the main menu of the watch - I don’t use 24/7 hr), and see the difference below! Same track/pace/weather/absence of warmup.

                                Without your trick:

@Dimitrios-Kanellopoulos tried it, didn’t work, still unrealistic hr for first 10 min.

@valdis830 said in Suunto 9 OHR readings:

                                          More tricks to improve reading?

                                          Use a chest strap 🙂
Suunto OHR has never worked for me (consistently 40bpm higher than actual). Chest strap fixes this for me. Can’t blame 'em, tattoos don’t play nice with OHR readings!
