Ambit 3 Peak Route Support for Suunto App

We never had an on-the-go route creator for Ambits, unless you count mobile web browser which is somehow useless on a small display using touch (at least for me). We had to use a PC to plan route on Movescount website, sure you had the option to sync your route via bluetooth using the Movescount App and now you have to use the cable, this is the only drawback as I see.

I agree that even on the old Movescount platform, using a phone or iPad to create a route wasn’t easy and for the most point not really all that possible/practical. But, you could still create a POI, and then the MC mobile app could sync it to the watch. Now, that will definitely not be possible, and I don’t travel on my excursions w/ a laptop. So for that use-case there is no option currently but the Ambit/Traverse product line where can manually input GPS coordinates from a phone app or map. Until Suunto adds POI to the Suunto App. Once that comes, I can consider moving to a new watch, until then, long live the A3P I guess. Hobbled but functional.
Still don’t know that I’ll switch, because without a firmware update and the ability to manually enter coordinates, if you don’t have cell service in the backcountry or offline maps in SA, still hobbled on the new watches. They are for sport, not really for backcountry use.

Actually, @Dimitrios-Kanellopoulos - this could be interesting. Firmware update on A3P to create POIs on the watch, manually entering coordinates. But I know…we are not going to see another A3P firmware update…does not make sense from a business perspective. If only the code was open source
some clever person could add it… -
@tomhaegler you actually can do that with a3p right now. AFAIK no other more recent suunto watch support this.

some clever person could add it…Tom, sorry I wasn’t clear there, but others jumped in. Yes, the Ambit series, 3 and prior…and the Traverse series…all allow defining a POI directly on the watch by entering GPS coordinates. Starting w/the Spartan forward, that’s been dropped. I moved from a Vertical to a Spartan, waited as long as i could for that feature that never came from Suunto, sold it, back to the A3P until it dies or Suunto decides to support us backpackers and backcountry travelers again.

@Prenj I think so, too! I will use it until it dies. I hope it’s possible and Suunto doesn’t brick it by shutting down all sync/settings possibilites. Even if I HAVE to use a cable - It’s not the end of the world…but I really hope they (or some 3rd party hackers) can keep it alive! Actually - if I knew it would be possible to use this watch in 5-6 years, I would buy a backup now, while it’s still available.

Just an idea, have not tried it yet… How about using Android USB server app? Maybe we could sync with Suuntolink by connecting watch to mobile phone with USB OTG? In that case I might install Suuntolink on a server in my company and be able to sync outdoors without carrying laptop with me…

It works! Well at least in local network. USB is recognized just as it was connected directly to computer. I tested with Moveslink2, but I guess there is no reason it shouldn’t work with suuntolink too.
Now I just need to see if this can work easily from outside of my local network by itself or I need VPN connection.

@Prenj , that’s a pretty neat approach!
But their licencing… quite reasonably priced one time purchase (yay!), bound to server hw with no licence transfer option (nay … ). For extra $90/year subscription they also provide their own VPN, already integrated into server. -
@margusl yeah, not exactly cheap… I see now there are few alternatives too. Will check them too. Btw this VPN they are offering, I tried it but it didn’t work for some reason…
The good thing is that there is an option to keep this mobile sync. Little more cumbersome, but OK, better then nothing.
Suunto could just make some “sync settings” app too… Well movescount app with stripped all other options would do just that. Not to much programming needed I guess. But I guess it’s off the table already so let’s do what we can…

When you’re done checking SuuntoLink and the VPN requirement (or not) … how about trying your hand at rephrasing the spec sheet line on “Watch customization”? “Wireless/USB sync” needs a bit of an update to reflect your findings and you’ve certainly earned the honor (/chore).
It might need a couple more words and a mention of possible additional cost. Also, for the Apple folk, isn’t iOS a bit picky on the OTG adapter front? A warning there?
Ought to be worth at least a Suunto gift voucher for this appropriate accessory.

@Dimitrios-Kanellopoulos How can you understand that a watch that was bought with a series of functions such as synchronizing routes with the movescount application and our A3P, being able to customize sport modes in our A3P, … and now we need suuntolink, cable and pc? It is not logical that they have taken away functions that we used to have, can anyone understand it? I at least am unable to understand it.
