In previous version the screen will be off if you don’t touch it for a while (though you cannot stop tilt to wake in sport mode) but this version it seems that sport mode is always on display.

It is a new functionality announced by Suunto. Now you can always see your screen during activities.

I read the manual and it says that “stay in Sunnto app can save more battery”. I am not sure if staying in Suunto app and keep always on display saves more battery or backing to the home screen and turning screen off saves more battery.

Maybe staying in Suunto app can prevent some other backgroud process from running and saves battery?

In the previous version you had:

Always on screen during activity that would just not show anything more than some lines.
You had to tilt to see the live data consuming full battery each time this was done either because you wanted it or by accident. That would fully power on the watch and it’s processes.

Now it shows live data without any battery issue using the low power processor.

          I hope it helps

Adding to this: leaving the app and enabling cinema mode still saves more battery energy. Just the watch is crippled to be a tracker only without all the functionality of customizable data fields.

@Egika and it will not notify at specified intervals as it does when screen is live.

@Dimitrios-Kanellopoulos - what does it mean under power savings options, under display where it says that if you have the always on map “You can still turn the display off with your palm”. I have tried putting my palm over the screen but didn’t do anything, so how do we turn off the display?

@Jamie-BG for me it works exactly as written.
The map screen will not time out and be always active - until you cover the whole screen surface with your hand.
Then it goes into low power mode.
                  Try it!

I charged to 100% and used the sport mode for hiking since this afternoon, so far 3 hour passed I have 55% battery left.

Will update here later how long can this new version sustains when the battery dies.

                    ========
I am not actually hiking, I am indoor working … not sure if this will positively / negatively impact this experiment.

So 6 hour 22 minutes “hiking”, airplane mode off (next time I can turn on and try), Good GPS, I have 4% battery left.

This will have a big influence on battery life. Indoors the watch constantly has tough GPS conditions and will most likely consume more energy than outdoors.

Like @Egika said, it is bad battery test conditions to be indoor.
At least, it may show that it should last at least … this duration.

Sorry, I have question about this. After the update, during activity the screen is always on? I can´t switch it off?
And second point I have set the display off and enabled only “double tap” on screen to see. But after the activity this is not set and I have to again change the settings on teh watch. There is enabled Tilt-to-wake off

Yes, this is a feature. It has the advantage to show your training data fields constantly and at the same time save energy by not enabling tilt-to-wake during the activity. This had caused issues with activities like paddling, where the display fully activated with each paddle stroke.
So now we got the best usability with least energy consumption. Try it! The low power always-on display is a special setting that makes the battery last veery long!

And second point I have set the display off and enabled only “double tap” on screen to see. But after the activity this is not set and I have to again change the settings on teh watch. There is enabled Tilt-to-wake off

And this is a bug. Work-around until this is fixed: Set the watch to your preferred setting (tap-to-wake) and then reboot (top left button press and hold).

@Egika One more question. After the update, notiffication during the activity are not visible? I feel only vibration, but I think there is no massage on the screen. Am I right?

In case that I now activate the Theater Mode to turn off the screen, this could improve a lot more the battery life on activities that I not need to check the display/data frequently?

@flypg you could activate theatre mode, and or push suunto app into the background (press home/menu button), but not sure you will notice significantly better battery life.
The always on data tracking screen is specially designed to use minimal battery life, and while its active its only using the low power coprocessor. on the odd occasion I have checked I didn’t notice any significant improvement to tracking battery life by switching off screen/and or putting app in background (not if in background - no notifications with auto-lap etc).

@jamie-bg I asked this because I had read about the low-power coprocessor, but I understand that the screen must also consume a significant percentage of battery to be ON, more when I do not need it sometimes at any time of the activity. But I really don’t know, thanks anyway, I think I’ll do a test of both ways to compare the battery level after the activity and if it is worth leaving the screen off.
