required hardware for app

Hi all, I currently only use Ambit 2S and Ambit 3 Peak watches (and a Spartan Trainer until recently). So so far I’ve only used Movescount. Now I’ve got a Suunto 5 coming my way which is supposed to work with the Suunto App which needs an Android or iOS device. As there currently is nothing else I need these OSses for I’d probably get something old and used to do that. Planning routes on a cellphone seems finicky to me so it would likely be a tablet pc. I’ve actually got a Pinebook Pro which could boot into Android 7.1 off an SD card but I understand it won’t run the Google Play Store hence you won’t be able to install the Suunto App.
So if I’d be shopping for something, what are the hardware requirements? And what version of Android would I need for the Suunto App to run?

Thank you. APK seems like a great solution, I’ll look into it. An old Android phone or tablet would be a decent alternative as I noticed Android 5.0 and over devices are abundantly available. Would be a distant alternative solution as it feels silly to create another account (for the Google store) just to access the Suunto App. But it is an option nonetheless. Thanks again!

you can try an android emulator on a pc…

There a couple. Bluestacks is oneIt should be OK for setting up things for Ambits - creating Suunto App account and connecting to 3rd party service. Thanks a lot. I don’t have the Suunto 5 yet (should arrive today) so I haven’t tested this but do you really need bluetooth to transfer data to/from the watch or will it also work with SuuntoLink? The 5 will (most likely) replace my broken Spartan Trainer which did have the capability to transfer data over bluetooth, but I always succesfully used SuuntoLink for that. I noticed in the manual that at least for the first time use you’ll need to connect the Suunto 5 to a computer and install SuuntoLink. There is no mention of it afterwards but it seems odd if they require new users to install a piece of software on their computer which can’t be used afterwards.
Either way, the Android emulators do look interesting as it saves me the hassle of installing Android on a finicky microSD for my Pinebook Pro. I do realize that I won’t be using some of the capabilities of my new watch (the phone connection) but then again no one probably uses everything. It seems like I have several options now, I’ll see what works best for me. (Which might eventually just indeed be to get a cheap Android phone and use that ;)).

I think the Suunto 5 was never compatible with movescount, so I guess not compatible with suunto link.

I’m afraid it’s only for firmware updates when it comes to Suunto 5. They just want to make sure new users would not get stuck due some old FW version. As far a I can tell, Suuntolink will sync activities to Suunto App only from Ambit-line, incl. Traverse & co.

I thought SuuntoLink was for the transfer of data to the app. I currently use Moveslink to transfer data from the Ambit 2S and Ambit 3 to Movescount, but it wasn’t compatible with the Spartan Trainer. So for that one I used SuuntoLink. However when I connected an Ambit watch to SuuntoLink nothing would appear in Movescount and my understanding was that SuuntoLink was to continue supporting the Ambit range, so to transfer data to the app. I recall some people were indeed disappointed that the Ambit 3 actually needed SuuntoLink as a substitute for the mobile transfer.

Maybe you are right.
I thought that suuntolink was made for movescount enabled devices. But you are maybe right, that it is also used for fw upgrades . You need to test. I only have ambit 3 -
