Ambit 3 and Polar Verity Sense for swimming
-
I just bought a Polar Verity Sense to use with my Ambit 3. The reason I decided for Verity Sense is Suunto Smart Sensor keeps good HR tracking for a few months (maybe electrodes loose ability to read HR, seems like going into short-circuit) and then I start to have strange readings (like 220 bpm). Also, when I kick the wall, chest belt generally moves, which doesn’t happen to armbands.
Unfortunately, I’m not able to use Polar sensor for swimming as I expected to happen, as it doesn’t seem to work as Suunto Smart Sensor (record HR in memory and then transfer to watch when connection becomes available, mid-trainning or at the end of trainning). In my case, I’m just seeing HR when both watch and sensor are out of water, and anything that happens when one of them is underwater is lost. Any thoughts on how to use it for swimming?

For this to work you really need Samart Sensor, that’s the only HRM Suunto watches can pull cached HR data from.
You might have some success when keeping your watch close enough to the sensor, like strapping it to your upper arm next to Verity or wear it in your cap if you’ve attached sensor to your goggles, likely no swimming metrics from A3 though. With Verity I’d just go with Polar Flow sync.

The polar unit should collect the data, and can be used without a watch to record your swimming, just like the OH1. It may just have difficulty communicating with your watch during the swim. If you use it to record the activity, you can view the data in Polar Flow (or Beat) and then export the TCX file to bring into QS.

@mvpereira I used a Polar OH1+ (which is fundamentally the same as the Verity) by wearing it on the same wrist as the Ambit3 and found that the signal travelled 2-3cm under water and thus the connection remained if I wore them close enough together.
I’m now using a Fenix 3 on which Garmin have disabled recording of HR when swimming and I use the OH1 in recording mode, export the file from Polar Flow after the swim and then add it to my swim workout in TrainingPeaks - TrainingPeaks then combines the HR and the swim details from the Fenix 3.
Either option should work for the Ambit3.
