Suunto 9 Baro // GPS problems & FusedTrack problems...
-
Good evening!
For some time - apparently since the last update - I have problems with my Suunto 9. At" longer" runs - just with short breaks in between, GPS problems arise and I have deviations of about 2km on 20km distance. (Comparison e.g. Garmin Fenix).
This behavior can already be determined during the run with the display of a pace that is clearly too good. By default, I run around 6min / km, then suddenly 4.15 min / km, after the break and for me completely unrealistic.
For this reason, I have tried to get this problem under control with the function FusedTrack. Unfortunately unsuccessfully. FusedTrack requires a recalibration before each run. I did not have this behavior before the last update.
Does anyone here have an idea?
I had the watch in service and got it back today, with a swapped barometer. An improvement in terms of GPS and FusedTrack has not occurred. Still the same problem.
Thanks for your ideas.
Best regards, Markus -
@remaklation Hi, I think is because the break stationary, somehow you are losing reference of the gps, do you go indoor in the break or anything like that? Thats why you see the pick up pace.
Try two things:
-
Don’t stop the watch in the breaks, pulse lap i.e, to see if the gps is good always. So we can delimitate where is the issue.
-
Try with different GPS systems… glonnas…
-
-
@remaklation We need to see links, GPS tracks preferably in Quantified Self.
-
@bulkan Thanks for the repy. To avoid any misunderstanding. By breaks I mean short drinking breaks, around 4-5 minutes, in the open. I´ve tried your ideas several times. Unfortunately without success.
Galileo / GLONASS / Beidou - always the same behavior.
@Brad_Olwin Thank you for the reply. Here now two links to activities where significant deviations were recorded…

PS: Do you have any idea why i need to recalibrate fused track before every activity?

@remaklation First of all, you say that you have compared with a Garmin Fenix, are you sure that the garmin is correct? Can you put links of the activity where you have different distance that the Garmin? The tracks that you have shared are quite good to come from fusedtrack.
For the length/duration of your activities, why you don’t use performance battery mode, the most precise of them? Regarding your comments on pace, do not pay to much attention to instant pace, a movement of your arm can trigger strange values, you should put more attention to average pace.
Fusedtrack is used on less precise battery options, where the GPS samples are wider, then the watch uses the internal sensors to determine the points of the track. It’s for that reason that needs to be calibrated every time. In my experience, you get a very good track but the distance is so/so. -
@cosmecosta both tracks were recorded in performance mode and without fused track.
I totally agree with you that both track look fine, but they aren’t. I can compare with a Fenix 5 and a Forerunner 745XT.
Example Fenix 5 (compared with my first link)
https://www.strava.com/activities/5066618654I‘ve never used fused track in the past because I don’t run the distances for which this feature seems to be designed for. And I’m always prepared and my battery is sufficiently charged. So performance mode ist my standard mode.
BUT. I can‘t imagine that fused track needs to be recalibrated before every single activity. OR do I really have to?
What do you think? And thank you for your support!

@remaklation the whole point of fusedtrack is that you save battery by turning off higher consumption sensors (GPS receiver) for a period and backfilling those void times with other sensor support, ie accelerometer and magnetic compass. The accelerometer from what I understand probably is adequately calibrated after a few GPS activities to learn your stride length so would be stable for longer periods of time not needing recalibration (unless user of watch changes) but compasses can get out of whack for all numbers of reasons. As others have pointed out in forum even small magnets on water belts and hydration packs can have an impact. It takes only 5 seconds to recalibrate compass and produces a really unique and clever solution to a difficult problem. Hope this clarifies a little!
-
@remaklation Well, the difference in distance is 0.84 km, and checking both tracks, the garmin seems to cut more edges and in some places is off in the short side, and the S9 is off in the long side, so probably part of the deviation can come from here. I do not see any strange in your tracks (I’m not an expert either).
As I said before, who says that the Garmins are correct? Besides, during the pauses, are you or the Garmins pausing the watch? Not pausing it can add some meters more. BTW, is the distance corrected by Strava in the Garmin?
If I were you probably I would do a soft reset of the watch, and do the same track again to see if the watch measures the same or similar. If the track and the values are consistent over the time there is nothing much you can do, except talk with service if you are still not happy.
BTW you can always blame Garmin to be inaccurate

@northeast_trekker interesting point.in the meantime, i talked to suunto support and sent the watch in for testing (again). i’m very curious if your tips regarding fused track will work like that. anyway, i’m completely convinced that fused track will work great (sooner or later). thanks!
-
@cosmecosta i´m sure that there are much more points du blame garmin
the parameters for the garmin and my suunto were completely identical. gps+glonass / autopause / … i will have to be patient until the watch is back from service…

@remaklation sometime ago I had a phone. It worked perfectly except during some calls I heard some clicking from the earpiece.
As I thought that flagship must be perfect, I took it to the service center. They’ve done nothing about the issue, but kept my phone for 3 weeks and wiped the data. As the issue wasn’t solved, I took it to service center again, and again. I think it was 3-4 times over 1 year period. So, I’ve spent only about 10/12 month with my gadget and the issue wasn’t solved still, and then it got stolen.
My point here is that some minor issues aren’t worth solving.
Of course I don’t want to encourage or discourage you to do anything, just saying. -
@дима-мельниченко i see your point and can relate to it. the request to resend the watch came from suunto support. if it doesn’t work now, i guess i will have to deal with it.
