I just wanted to throw out the query about vertical gain not being calculated properly and wondering what help or feedback anyone might have on this. Myself and my fiancee both have Suunto 9’s and find that depending on the mode used to record our runs, the vertical gain being calculated is wildly inaccurate. TIA to anyone who can provide any insight!

@brayden Do you have some more information? Some examples maybe?

@brayden non-baro, right? In this case I’d suggest either going for bigger elevation gains at one time rather than more small elevations changes as those are filtered out (think a 70m+ hill instead of multiple 20m ones).
Or not to pay attention to elev. gain at all and just correct it with strave or some other service, not possible in SA atm.

Just a minor thing that might help: after you get GPS lock, wait a tad longer - a minute or so, this will help to determine starting altitude better + improve gps quility mid activity.

@surfboomerang Ha! Yeah almost every time we run would be an example. My fiancee has done a short loop from the house through the neighborhood with minimal amount of up and down and been getting 800-900 feet of vertical gain recorded in regular run mode.
Yesterday I ran a 10mile trail loop that gave me less than 400 feet and then when I let Strava auto adjust it gave me over 1000. I recorded that run in trail running mode, am planning to run the identical loop in the next couple days in regular run mode to see the difference. If I go for a walk and record in walk mode, it almost seems like it’s giving too much vertical again at times. Thanks for the reply! 🙂

@дима-мельниченко Thanks! My watch is the non-baro, my fiancee’s is the baro version though and her’s seems more inconsistent than mine.

@brayden your results are not unexpected for non-baro I would say - have more or less the same issue.
For the baro version: look for other threads in the topic, it may be beneficial to clean baro holes, check whether the holes are being blocked by clothing or if perhaps they contact with moist skin. If nothing helps - I’d contact support.

@brayden Map layers aren’t always accurate as well as I learned in the past. Is the sensor clear on the baro version? So no clogged holes or a sleeve that touches the sensor every time.

Is the baro watch worn on the left or right wrist?

Thanks for both of your replies. I have asked her to clean it even though she says it doesn’t appear blocked, hasn’t been wearing anything recently that would touch it and wears it on the left wrist.
I will definitely search for other topics. She’s noticing the battery draining crazy fast now too so maybe just got a lemon.
