April is Coming ! (S7)

I’m wondering which brand of fitness/smartwatch have the best record of keeping it up to date. Suunto unfortunately seems very bad keeping at least the 7 updated.
-
@harboe but it still updates almost 4 year old S9, that’s cool, right?

Suunto should really consider publishing at minimum security updates to Suunto 7 smartwatch. Having internet connected device with personal information including payments without security patches is ticking bomb for Suunto brand.
I think this is done with the WearOS updates. Suunto does not need to update the sports side for security.

What needs to be updated? While there are features I would like to have on the S7, for example customizable HR zone is probably my #1, why does it need updating? The sports side is fairly complete and I think Suunto has been clear that external sensors for the Suunto Wear OS app is not going to happen.
-
@brad_olwin security updates should at least be kept kinda up to date, like another user recently said.

And that is Googles job as that is part of WearOS. Why would the Suunto App need security updates? Again, I doubt that is Suunto’s responsibility.
-
@brad_olwin if it’s like android phones, it’s the manufacturer’s job to push out security patches that Google provides. For instance, Samsung tests and pushes out the android security patches for their phones after Google makes them available to them. So it probably is Suuntos job to do this for the S7.

Since WearOS on the watch is updated independently and has been updated several times since the last Suunto update I doubt it. I am sure there are some patches Suunto needs to occasionally do but general WearOS updates are not part of that.
-
I’ve received a feedback mail from Suunto asking me how I like the first couple of months with my S7.
I think it is an automatic mail (most likely it is!), but if S7 (or wearOS in general) would be completely off Suuntos radar, my opinion would be that they stop sending emails like that. -
@freeheeler it’s possible they want to se how the transition to Wear 3 goes before they make a decision. If they do make a wear 3 device, they might have to redo a lot of the work they did, so they might not want to continue to invest resources in an app for Wear 2. Guess we’ll just have to wait and see.

@aleksander-h
I must say that I liked the S7 from what I saw. I used it only briefly as a backup while my S9B was in service… what I disliked most is that I had to keep the charging cable in mind permanently.
I am curious if Suunto is working on a new WearOS and how it will be -
@freeheeler I don’t mind the charging. That said, I wanted a smart watch that was also a good running watch, so I wasn’t expecting anything with multi-day battery.

It is same as for Android. Manufacturer has to apply the security patch when it is available and push it to watches. If you still don’t believe it, check security patch version on S7 - it is “July 2021”.
-
Anyone know what the latest security patch is for wear 2? Tried to Google it but couldn’t find any information.
-
It’s great that other models receive updates but as S7 owner I wait some fixes over the S7, I not mention improvements because at this times looks as miracle, but only fix. Only to metion few things:
- I expect for a random reboot on mid of any activity, that is bad
- Altimerter have very strange behavior, only with the SWA, not with other apps
- GPS also have some strange behaviors on zones that should be perfect for any other GPS device
- Can’t use meters/seconds on a device that support paragliding sport mode… weird…
- And few others that now not take in considration because maybe was my mistake think that the S7 was a “Suunto watch” + WearOS = “a dream device” and it was not so. Even, reading the manual in advance, I expected more on future firmware upgrade at the purchase moment like the additions of the Suunto Tiles, etc. but not was the case either.
I still like the S7 but now I prefer to sell it in the short time. This feeling of “better to sell this device” didn’t happen me with the A3P or even the S9B, and remember me my experience with the Garmin Fenix few years ago…
And as I said in another thread, it doesn’t make sense for me to wait for a new WearOS 3 model when 2 didn’t live up to my expectations.

@freeheeler Suunto is snoozing big time, the competition is running away with fantastic new watches. It seems like Suunto couldn’t care less. I had the S7 and really enjoyed using it but it fell short of Garmin in so many aspects. Unless Suunto bring out an S7 Gen 2 with major improvements, I am afraid it will always be my second best.
Very annoying automatic emails even though I had the S7 for more then 6 months
-
@binoworld-uk
bear in mind that Suunto is a relatively small company and I personally think they do great things and also the way they do it convices me -
@binoworld-uk Garmin are sports watches first with a few smart features added in. The S7 is a smartwatch first with many great sports features added.
The S7 should not be compared to Garmin devices (or even typical Suunto watches), instead it should be compared to other smartwatches (WearOS, Apple, etc) where it comfortably beats most of them in most categories.
I believe it achieved it’s mission and then some. Is it perfect? No. But it is the first WearOS device from Suunto and it beats WearOS devices from companies that have been making them for years (Fossil, Mobvoi, Samsung, etc).
The S7 is now over two years old. Barely any other WearOS devices get major updates beyond a year (security updates still come through on all devices as and when they are released by Google. These are NOT monthly like they are with the phones).
I would love Suunto to release an S7mkII, as with iterative improvements, modern hardware, and customer feedback they could really knock it out of the park.
What has held the S7 back (in my opinion) has been the lack of advertising and market awareness (Samsung, Fossil, and TicWatch are all people really talk about) and charging too much (£420 when new was crazy money, even the overpriced Samsung watches aren’t that much and the S7 could do so much more!).
I worry that the lack of sales of the S7 will mean it will be destined to be a one off

Personally I think what held it back was the many missing features when it launched. Many reviews you find online were not the best because they were all based on the original software. They weren’t updated to reflect what the S7 is capable of now.

I agreed that these missing features did hurt it, but none of the Samsungs, Apples, Fossils had those features either. Yes they could be added with third party apps on those devices, but that was also the case for the S7.
I feel that many reviewers were treating the S7 as another Suunto watch and comparing it to things like the Suunto 9 or Garmin/Coros/Polar watches, which was simply crazy.
At launch, even when it didn’t have all the features it does now, the S7 was still a WAY more complete fitness smartwatch than any other smartwatch on the market.
However, this did not justify the insane price at launch. £420 was simply too much for a smartwatch. Especially when it wasn’t being advertised and barely anyone knew about it.
When people saw my S7 and asked about it barely any of them even knew of Suunto, let alone the S7. Those that did were divers and only knew about the dive watches.
Once I explained it people most were extremely interested - a full on smartwatch that could track fitness as well as proper sport swatch, yes please they said! Then they saw the price and noped out faster than a greased up whippet.I have never seen an advert for Suunto here in the UK (apart from a few targeted adds on social media but they don’t count). But I see adverts for Apple and Samsung pretty much daily. It’s no surprise to learn they are the top two smartwatch sellers.
With aggressive advertising and more aggressive pricing then Suunto could take a sizable chunk of the market. If they keep as they are then they will sell even fewer S7mkII then they did the first one (if they even release one at all).
