Did not see any discussion on here on the new road surfaces layers that the suunto app has. Apparently it is a beta feature?

I think it’s very cool data and could be very useful planning gravel bike rides etc. However I think the layers are currently too bold and would need some transparency so that one could also see the base outdoors map beneath it. Now the road surface layers seem to make the maps quite unreadable in dense areas and you need to really zoom into small areas to make sense of it all. However whem you are planning a longer route you would want to zoom out.

@6294946 i would also suggest, that you can „draw“ missing surfaces in the app like you could do when creating routes. Suunto could even „collect“ this data like they do with heatmaps, so they would get user based, current surface layers.

it’s not Suunto who delivers the data for the surface but open street maps. we need to send our feedback to them in order to improve the data quality, same with all other data from osm

Uh 😄 ? You mean hunting down those damn hippies how don’t have anything better to do with their free time than mapping & moderating for OSM 🙂 ? Or was it other way around - those damn hippies who dare do dream of doing anything else but mapping & moderating for OSM …

Anyone wanting OSM to be a better data source - show an example and make your first edit today, not tomorrow or day after. You don’t even need an account to start with some simple tasks like leaving a note about issues on https://www.openstreetmap.org map. Click - add note - done. OSM is no-one else but we ourselves.

What you can do from the app is sending feedback to mapbox that use OSM as base map layer

@freeheeler , maybe I was bit sarcastic here, but OpenStreetMap is where it is only thanks to people who take the moment to contribute. Especially on details like road surface and other bits that require local knowledge. While Mapbox and other companies can provide fancy renders and better routing algorithms, their role in data quality is relatively small. Well, maybe not small but indirect - their work opens up OSM for more people and this in turn increases the number of potential volunatry contributors.

It’s those hobby-mappers and random guys on their random bike rides who have made OSM one of the most popular map source - they notice that they were either routed to or off bit unexpected sectitions and later are willing to take taht moment and fix that wrong surface tag in OSM or close a gap between line sections that was messing with routing.

And it’s pretty damn fantastic watching your own OSM edits propagting into hundreds of mobile apps & online maps during next few weeks.

Yeah I understand that the source data comes from OSM and it is great that it exists in the first place but my point was mostly about the visualization of that data. Supposedly suunto has, or at least could have, some control over it, or am I completely mistaken?

                        Well, maybe.
I’ll check if there are parameters available for that in the mapbox api
