I just got a Suunto 9 Peak and find that the Raise to Wake feature is activating the backlight A LOT during my runs. My arm swing is pretty moderate, so nothing the sensors should be confusing with raising my wrist to my face.
Amusingly, it is also not waking occasionally when I do bring it to my face…
I was previously wearing a Garmin Fenix 3 and never had this problem.

Any thoughts? I would prefer to not disable the feature entirely, as I run before the sun is up most mornings.

@ren-bergmann yeah, same thing on my S9, also when I intentionally raise the watch, it doesn’t always work perfectly.

If you’re annoyed with constant blinking, you could turn ‘always on backlight’ in the activity settings. Otherwise, let it blink!

I also don’t find this feature working well (and told that to Suunto). I have this disabled, and rely on the adaptive backlight of the Peak. And if running in the dark, I enable the backlight in the exercise option (it can also be done mid run).

@isazi Is it raise to wake will save more battery compare to Adaptive backlight?

@babychai I don’t know. Could save memory in some cases, and not in others.

I also think it really depends on the specific user. but in any case it will be very hard to compare and the effect will be minimal

It really is user specific, though generally ambient should save more than wrist gesture.
I find that I am a user that tends to trigger most wrist gestures more than most so in the past, and currently I have always found I can save more battery by turning off wrist gestures as I am not triggering the screen to wake/backlight when not required.

You will not notice it overly with a transflective MIP screen, but boy can you notice a change like this with an AMOLED screen whether using AOD on or AOD off - both show a saving when I turn off wrist gesture.

@jamie-bg Got it. I understood what you meant. I can feel it when i wear Suunto 9. It will save a lot battery when turn off raise to wake.

@babychai for the 9 (non peak) I would actually enable the raise to wake to avoid having the backlight always on, unless you prefer to press a button to light up the screen.

agree, I did that and I don’t notice a higher battery consumption. 24/7 HR and frequent activity have a much higher impact than backlight IMHO
