      Hello everyone,

I’m really shocked at the massive difference in distance between the treadmill and the Suunto Race (yes, I know you can edit the distance afterwards).
My Polar was more accurate and I was able to calibrate it.
      This is described here: https://support.polar.com/en/speed-and-distance-from-the-wrist-with-gps-calibration

      How GPS calibration works

To enhance the accuracy of speed and distance measured from the wrist, the watch uses GPS offset calibration. The watch compares speed values measured with the accelerometer with values measured with GPS, and calculates momentary speed calibration offset values based on the difference.

      Calibration requirements:

Sport profile used must be running or walking type (listed below)
Steady pace speed is at least 7 km/h for at least 15 minutes
The terrain you run on is flat enough

Is there a similar function for the Suunto?
I have not yet found a setting option in the app or on the watch.

      Thanks for your tips

@laufbursche7 Yes, the function is called Stryd 😁

I was ranting about the accuracy from the 9 Peak on (actually if I remember correctly the Spartan had much better accuracy), and then just gave in on BlackFriday and bought a Stryd. Now my pace is a few seconds per km off from the treadmill.

There is also other hardware RUNN sensor… but no SW option on the watch.

@laufbursche7 yes, for running and walking this is active in the background for Suunto.
After completing the first activity that has enough data, you will get a notification “running calibrated” or “walking calibrated”.
AFAIK this will update continuously afterwards and the calibration be used for treadmill runs or other running/walking activities without GPS

Oke then the notification appears on the watch?
This is my fourth treadmill session for now.

@laufbursche7 it will only calibrate when running outdoors with GPS on.
Notification will only happen after the first successful outdoor GPS-based run.
Treadmill will then be able to use this calibration data.

Still, you can adjust the treadmill distance in the watch right after the workout.

                  That doesn’t make any sense.
I want to calibrate the treadmill units.
Outside, the distances fit so far. There were minimal differences of a few meters between the Suunto Race and my old Vantage M.
I’m only concerned about the massive deviations without GPS on the treadmill.

as far as i understand, the watch will learn from your outdoor gps activities (calibrate) your way of running (step lenght, pace, etc…) and then (once calibrated), your watch should be more precise while running on the threadmill using threadmill sportsmode (without GPS)

@laufbursche7 it does make sense very much. And it works as described in your initial post.
let me try to rephrase in case of misunderstanding:

                      • On the treadmill, there is no speed information from GPS signals.
                      • the watch tries to deduct your speed from your arm movement (frequency and amplitude etc).
                      • arm movement dring running is highly individual
                      • that is the reason why a calibration is needed
                      • the calibration will take place automatically during a run with proper GPS, where the watch reads GPS speed and wrist movement.
                      • this data is then used on activities without GPS

                      Speed= Calibration_Factor * arm_movement

To find the Calibration_Factor you need to know both Speed (from GPS) and arm_movement (during activity)

If you have it you can derive the speed according to above formula.

Not sure if it helps, but I ran on a treadmill yesterday evening for the first time since the latest S9PP firmware update. After finishing, I saw the option to edit the distance (in the watch) to match the treadmill, which I did. After doing this, I saw a message: something like ‘treadmill calibrated.’

@laufbursche7 Hi, did you get the message about the treadmill calibrated? Actually I’m using race S, but it seems that the distance also not accurate everytime.

Weird thing is, at the low speed (when you walk on treadmill) 4-5km/h, the watch record longer distance than the treadmill, It become more accurate at high speed >7.5km/h.
However, when I’m running at pace 6, the watch only shows pace 7.

@Arie-Rahmadi the calibration message has been removed in current firmware versions.
Still the calibration is taking place in the background.

@Egika the calibration will be depend on outdoor running only? or will it done after several treadmill session?

After the last update - as soon as you finish running on the treadmill you can change the distance according to what appears on the treadmill and then all the data is reset accordingly
It is important to emphasize that the change in the clock must be done before pressing - finish

@Danny-poleg pardon me, what do you mean by “all the data reset accordingly”. Is it only the calculation of avg pace or including the avg pace per split? Because in my experience it just the first one, the avg pace per split did not change.
Example: I run on speed 6km/h for 1 hour, the treadmill calculate distance as 6km, while the watch record 8km. If I update the distance in the watch as 6km, indeed the avg pace in the general information change, but the avg pace in every split still the same based on 8km.

Suunto still have not fixed the calibration, for me it’s awful. I’m doing 8:30 pace and the watch register 12:30 pace. I calibrate every time after and I also run outside.

On top of this, after you calibrate, the app won’t adjust the mile splits…All this worked very well in my old Coros watch. I hope Suunto fix this bug!
