    Hi,

I have been using an Ambit 3 Peak watch since 2012. It has been amazing for my activities which is mostly running, skiing and swimming. I also tend to use the push notifications functionality from my smart phone quite frequently.

However, the main limitation for me with the Ambit 3 Peak is that it’s quite uncomfortable to wear with its bulkiness and weight.

I am now looking to upgrade to most probably the Race S or the Peak 9 Pro. Whats people opinion on this?

@Oscar-Lundberg Peak Pro is amazing. My only concern is the readiblity of the screen. I am 55 and it is not like the perfect screen for my eyes, very difficult to read for smaller fonts and not under direct sunlight. It is my only complain. I have not seen or tried Race, but the form factor looks equivalent (very comfortable) and I am sure that the screen would be much better.

      Just my 2 cts.

@Oscar-Lundberg get the race s! it’s pointless to go for 9peak pro as it has reached it’s limits and is a much older watch

race s has a lot more to offer

I agree, unless for some reason you prefer the MIP display

I really love the PP for the long battery duration and the 3 button menu and the titanium is rather robust but the race s has a better display and maps. I quite often have to check on the phone while navigating cause the routing is a bit a desaster at trail forks at all watches. With a map at least one can see wich trail to take.

9 peak pro is the same hardware as vertical and race
The difference is in the storage, but the CPU is the same.
The GPS chip is also the same but the second antenna set is not connected on the 9PP, so that’s why the 9PP doesn’t support dual band.
            OHR is different too.

I charge my 9PP about once a week while recording activitys of about 1 to 2 hours each day.
Specs Say 21 Days Smartwatchmode for the 9pp and 9 for the Race S.
            Trainingmodes on the P9P 40 h. / 70 h. / 300 h.
            Race S: 30 h. / 40 h. / 60 h. / 120 h.

Would be great if there would be a watch with maps but without AMOLED.

I’ve been using the A3P, and after that the S9B…
Currently my wife still uses the S9PP, and I’m now using both the SV and the SRs.

If you’re looking right now for a new watch of the size of the S9pp/SRs, I would go without any hesitation for the SRs.

It’s a really awesome watch for the price. I love my SV and its MIPs display, but the SRs amoled screen is wonderful too (even in bright sun).
Only concern that might bother you : gorilla glass vs saphire. ( => but it’s maybe not a big concern cf this thread)

Many other points are - for me - leading to SRs vs S9pp (MAPs, better) OHR sensor.

@Ecki-D, if this could help you, I was worried that a Race would have been too big for my very small wrist, and I was considering going for the S version. However, due to the larger battery life and an excellent deal on Black Friday, I went for the Race. Best choice ever! It is not so big and heavy on the wrist for daily usage, running, and trekking IMO. So I’m saying that the difference between 9PP and Vertical could be less than one may imagine 🙂

@Oscar-Lundberg I would go for Race S (slightly larger screen with much more pixels, i.e., more sharp and readable IMO) + dual-band GPS that makes a difference in terms of accuracy (from my experience)

                      @Ecki-D

How does the Heart Rate monitoring differ between the two model? I have heard that the Race S has quite a good HR. How about the 9PP?

Do I also get it correctly that with the MIP (9PP) you can have the watch display always on without any severe battery drain, whereas for the Race S, you basically turn of the display when not looking at the watch, unless explicityly setting it on Always on Display, but then draining the battery significanly?

@Oscar-Lundberg Always On on the Race S is very dimmed. So if you can live with raise to wake, then its great. But if not (like mounted on the bike) its not really readable

I had PP9 (give it to my mom), Using Vertical and I was able to test Race + Race S. So far Vertical is best Suunto watch for me. Race family got much better screens (amoled) and works much faster than Vertical, especially ,Race S". Battery of Vertical is insane, and I didnt like always on display on race (but its understandable of course to protect burn of screen). Not sure if iam fan of crown. I very rarely use touch screen, mostly buttons, Crown in Race works so fast, in ,S" version its more clumsy. Cool thing i think I could use it.

Consider to get Vertical, My wrist is not big, But I get used to Vertical (24/7, sleep with it, only taking off for shower or to clean it) and I feel more comfortable and looks better on my wrist than Race S. Also not sure if ,Vertical S" or Peak 9 Pro with maps would be good option for smaller screen. I truly recommend Vertical, its even much better than when released.

@Oscar-Lundberg The Race S has a better HR Sensor than the Race and 9PP. They doubled the number of LEDs and so it is more durable to wrist movement, low temperature and loose wear.
For running and cycling I use the heart rate belt cause especially at cycling wrist hr is not very accurate at all.
When running, the sensor can be almost as good as Applewatch.

GPS is better too, at least compared to the 9PP.
But I am quite confident with the 9PP for my main activies like hiking, mtb-ride, (xc)-sking, running.
Openwater Swimming was a complete failure for me when wearing on the wrist even when raising it out of the water every now and then but seems to work with the Race S. https://www.dcrainmaker.com/2024/06/suunto-race-s-in-depth-review-smaller-cheaper.html?utm_source=chatgpt.com#mapping-navigation
