Ability to rotate through different views of the same data screen, which, for instance, would be very useful on the map screen. For example in Ambit I could instantly toggle between a detailed map, and overview map, and an upcoming waypoint view by pressing the View mode. I think that was super useful. In contrast, modern Suunto UX has completely lost the ability to give you details about about an upcoming waypoint, except when you do a direct navigation to a single waypoint.

The UX didn’t just give up on the button to show the results of the function, the post-Ambit FW gave up on the function. You could add back the button to toggle views … and you’d get the same on-route details that a “Next WP” field in an exercise mode will give today. I’d like the option for direct-to-WP details, too, but I don’t think that’s precluded by the 3-button layout.

I use the Race in summer and find the crown an enhancement. In the winter I find the crown cumbersome and use the Vertical or Ocean. I know, I have access to these watches. If I was purchasing and not testing I would own a Race S as it is ideal for running and a Vertical as I would use the latter for Ski Mountaineering, Multi-day FastPacks and any races longer than 100k. I wear the Race S for sleeping and most of the time.

I had the impression that you can only pair one watch with the Suunto App. Am I wrong?

If I could have a watch of my dreams ?
well, I love, my 9peak pro, so , let’s start with that, its a compact and beautiful machine, nothing even come close for “smartwatch that can be worn with a suit”.

              • Put a wider screen so that the ugly gigantic bezels are less unsightly now that its wider ,put some map support
              • keep the MIP ans sapphire cristal,
              • add dual band GPS from Vertical
              • add solar if you can
              • and use the enhanced HRM from Race S.

Then, you manufacture this in Finland, so that you have a real differentiation factor from “absolutely all other sport smartwatches in the world” (to my knowledge ?)
You ship it with a software that does “exactly the same as before” but you stop adding bugs, and unnecessary fluff

Make it 1000€; i don’t care if this is what it should cost, Garmin can sell 1000€ ugly-ass fenix made in Taiwan, so you’re still good margin wise.

Instant buy, no questions asked, i would even add 2 extra overpriced wrist-straps just for support

@runomatic I only have one watch and the Suunto App says “Connect a different device - This will disconnect Suunto Race S” (translated from German). That gave me the impression…
Ah, I see you have to manually switch between them, if you paired more than one…

Pardon my sceptisim, but I think its just a matter of how you define made in finland
In France, its “the last meaninful manufacturing step”, so if the watch are sent from China with just the back not assembled, someone in Finland put the back shell in an engraving machine, then place the shell on the watch and thightnen the screw, that could be enough to qualify it as “Made in Finland”.
I hope its not the case for Suunto, truly.

@2b2bff Yes, that’s the way it works. Only one watch connected at the same time. I have 3 watches registered in App and can select wich one is the “chosen one”

A long press on the lower button will bring up a menu, First on that is button lock, which I use with SkiMo. So it is there.

Right. I used the lock menu so I am familiar with this. Except this doesn’t work this way when on the map screen because the map overloads the lower button to show the map specific menu. And it is the map screen where I need to lock/unlock the most often because unlocking the watch is required in order to change the map zoom level.

So basically, to change the map zoom level I have to the following:

                            1. Change from the map to another data screen
                            2. Long press on the lap button to bring the menu
                            3. Press button to unlock
                            4. Change back to the map screen
                            5. Rotate the crown to change the zoom level
                            6. Change again to another data screen
                            7. Long press on the lap button to bring the menu
                            8. Press button to lock
                            9. Change back to the map screen

That is an awfully inconvenient series of steps just to change the zoom level. But if I am not locking the watch and my sleeves are wet, then the map starts to pane on its own all the time, which is equally frustrating.

Perhaps the right short term solution should be to allow to change the map zoom level when the watch is locked. That seems quite reasonable to me - that isn’t any worse than allowing pressing on the crown to change between the data screens. The same should apply to changing between the vertical profile views when the watch is locked. Both actions are easily reversible so they should be allowed in the locked mode.

Indeed it is when on the map screen and as you do, I often use the map screen when stopped because I need to see where I am in relation to the map. Often that requires panning and zooming. This has been discussed among the testers and I think will be improved. I have no idea what the timeline is.

I am one of those people. In 14 years I owned 2 Garmin watches, then 3 Suunto watches, then 2 Garmin watches again, then a Suunto watch again. I do prefer Suunto for a number of reasons. I preferred Garmin for a number of different reasons. The second time I moved to Garmin is because of lack of maps in Suunto models. That’s what many people wanted and Suunto had to introduce that to stay competitive. The same applies to a few other things, for example the Garmin’s Climb Pro feature - Suunto has finally introduced as Climb Guidance, although it is still not as good. These are all good features that fit Suunto target audience really well. There are a few other features that I wish Suunto had because I think those features would really benefit it by making it more attractive to a number of users and therefore more competitive. I do think that Suunto needs to stay agile in order to stay competitive. It doesn’t need to blindly copy hundreds of Garmin’s features many of which are half baked or irrelevant. But it shouldn’t overlook a few good features that would fit Suunto ethos either.
