Hi, I have just returned my 2nd Suunto Vertical Titanium Solar for replacement. I purchased this very expensive watch back in July. I use the Vertical for Open Water only. The first watch began glitching, randomly rolling from menu to menu without me pressing any buttons. Buttons were also unresponsive. And so I returned it and received a replacement, which has sat idle in my draw as I have been hesitant to use it. A few days ago, I took the watch open water swimming. I completed the activity, a 3km swim, but then became totally unresponsive shortly after. Despite troubleshooting, the watch could not be powered back on and so it has been returned and I am currently awaiting my 3rd replacement. Clearly, the Suunto Vertical has a hardware fault when exposed to water. There are other posts on this forum that describe exactly the same thing. I expect after receiving my 3rd watch replacement that this same fault will reoccur and I will keep returning the watch until Suunto provides a fix for this problem along with compensation for wasting my time. That is to say that the returns process is lengthy and I am without a watch!

@todgerama do you have touch enabled in your open water swimming activity?

Occasionally after a run, my Vertical freaks out and touch isn’t responding anymore. A reboot fixes this. I also use the watch for windsurfing a lot. On my windsurfing profile, touch is disabled and the watch never freaks out.

Sorry to hear that… it’s sad for a watch that’s supposed to be a multi-sport adventure/rugged watch! This brings me to one question touched here in the forum about the opearability of buttons when immersed in water: have you pressed them while swimming? It’s not clear to me at all if the buttons are supposed, by design, to be operated (or not!) underwater… Maybe someone around can clarify about that… Thanks.

I had that every few weeks: I’d try and interact with the display one morning, find it had effectively lost its calibration, and would reboot.

                Not helpful to OP, mind.

@todgerama Same thing here… Suunto Vertical Titanium Solar just went for a training in the swimming pool today only to find out that the watch leaked water inside!

I am about to return it. It is unacceptable for this kind of watch and for the treatment it undertakes from my side.

@todgerama Just curious… what was the solution after those replacements? Did they tell you to service the watch regularly with some silicon oil (I suppose) applied to the base of the buttons? I bought this watch for this purpose only I cannot accept it that it leaks water inside nevertheless.

Well the watch is in Prague right now and the service department asked for 480 euros to fix it.

I tried to talk to an agent and what they replied with was a copy paste of the warranty policy from their site.

I tried to mention that the watch was only used sparsely and under controlled conditions (swimming pool and willing to sent the logs from the phone app) in those 2+ years I own it and again they replied with the copy paste warranty policy from their site.

Lesson learned is to use as much as you can the Vertical so when it goes off it will be within the warranty period. And for those that want to keep it pristine while using it for swimming I suggest to sent it once a year or once per two years for service before the gaskets are worn off.

@todgerama The same thing happened with the Garmin 7X Pro. When I was doing hard 50 m intervals, water would get in through the lap button. I sent it in for service twice and they replaced it.

When I wore the watch on my right wrist, so the “faulty” buttons weren’t exposed to the strong pressure when entering the water, the problem didn’t occur.

It must have been a fairly common issue, because the Fenix 8 now uses magnetic induction buttons instead of mechanical ones.

To avoid the same problem with the Suunto Vertical, I wear the watch on my right wrist when swimming

@Manuel-Extreme 10 ATM is just the minimum rating for using a watch for swimming.
And if you start using it in the shower, sauna, etc., the gaskets will eventually cease to function properly.
