POSITION OF BARO SENSOR

Hi - In my experience, the barometer sensor opening on the Suunto Vertical is too large and positioned in a way that catches too much air, skewing the ascent elevation readings during gusts of wind. The Suunto Peak has a smaller opening located on the side facing the arm, and I consider it more accurate at calculating elevation gain. Couldn’t this be addressed in the watch’s design? Or is there a specific reason for it? Thanks

@domi87 which Suunto Peak are you referring to? 5 Peak, 9 Peak?
And yes, barometric sensor position undergo constant changes, as there is no ideal position.
Wind and dirt will affect the sensor. Then there is people wearing the watch on the left and others on the right arm.
Baro sensor at 9 o’clock is quite protected on the teft arm but a lot less so on the right arm.
Then it is different when watch is worn on the arm or put on the bike handlebar.
Sensor at 9 o’clock will be badly affected by headwind when put on a bike.That’s why most recent Suunto watches have settled with sensor at 6 o’clock.

With last version of firmware the algorithm for calculating ascent was tunned and the wind and rain do not affect as before, are you using the last firmware?
In my experience, the S9B was extreamly more sensitive to wind and rain then the SV1 was with previous firmwares or is now with the last one.@egika the 5 Peak does not have baro

@cosme.costa ciao! yes I saw that for vertical2 there is the update 2.56.28 that mention this update, but I’ve vertical1 and the last version is 2.50.28 - Do you know if a software update with uphill correction is forecasted also for vertical1?

@Egika I hadn’t considered the points you raised (watch on the left vs. right wrist and the bike). I have to say I agree with them—thanks. With cycling, the distances are usually so great that I’ve never really compared the readings; I actually find it very precise. However, for hiking and ski mountaineering, I find my Vertical 1 less accurate than the 9 Peak, likely due to the sensor’s position. 9 peak pro instead has the sensor in the same position of vertical but only two little holes, and I find it a little more precise (my girlfriend has it) for uphill, gps vertical is better
