Custom Batery Performance Mode
-
It would be interesting to have a custom battery mode.
Parameters:
- GPS precision: 1, 3, or 5 times/second
- HR: on/off
- Map: on/off
- Vibration: on/off
- Screen: on/off
This would be useful because, in my case, for example, I want to do long walking journeys with the map always available, but I don’t want to track every second, and I don’t want to record HR.
The priorities are really subjective, so having a fully customizable battery mode would be very useful.
All the settings you mention:
HR, Map, Vibration, Screen : can already be set to on or off for each sport mode individually.Just the GPS recording rate is kind of fixed.

There are some strange things with the settings. If I turn down gps accuracy to save battery, maps is also disabled. Most of the time I really don’t need dual frequency gps, but having some context when following a gpx is nice.
Although I did breadcrumb navigation for over 10 year with my ambit 3 and forerunner 935 and I never got lost it’s preferable to have more fine grained choices.
Have to say, don’t know what would give the highest battery safe, turning down gps accuracy or disabling maps.

@elbee You can switch GPS modes during activity and enable map. But yes, that is not good solution.
-
Also that the gps setting you choose isn’t persistent over activities. Every activity starts with highest settings.

@Miquel-Debón How long are your walks going to be?. You can already record 50-60 hour non-stop activities in the most accurate GPS mode and even longer if you switch to endurance battery mode.
From what I remember being discussed on this forum, if the map is on, other things don’t matter that much. If you turn HR off, which you can already do, or have a less frequent GPS refresh, the difference is going to be fairly minimal because modern GPS chipsets draw very little power.
In fact, the battery life is great, and as you mentioned, the maps are what consume the most battery, so it’s fine as it is.

There are 2 kinds of battery life. The first one is, how long does the watch last before it is switched off due to empty battery. You could influence this by turning off aod, reducing gps accuracy etc. You are probably right if you say, the watch lasts long enough to bother with some settings.
The other kind is how long does the battery (or more the watch) last in years. Some people want to use their watch for many years. Battery is in most cases the limiting factor. In 5 years time does the watch still work 40 hours on 1 charge? You can extend the battery life somewhat , by not charging often. And to not charge often, it helps to turn off or down high energy consumers.
For me, the battery life in years is quite important.

@HonzaS Ok thanks so things changed with the later models.

This is correct. And known. And annoying.
The last watch that could enable maps in lower GPS mode was Suunto Vertical, which had the custom battery modes. -

This is correct too. We have just discussed this in another topic. I checked with Suunto and it seems to be by design (though for S9PP and SV the documentation says it would be remembered…)

@snow I have just tried with my recent test watch (not V2). For me no way to change battery mode without disabling maps.
Will try with V2 later -
And annoying.
That’s how I decide to keep a watch: is the amount of annoyance within limits. So far my race s is less annoying than my previous forerunner 965 and about on par with the forerunner 935. Never had a watch that was annoyance free.
For me this is one is only annoying in theory. As I have never felt the need to use other GPS modes than performance.
Even for the longest activities I have ever done (36h or so), perfomance has always been good. -

Even for the longest activities I have ever done (36h or so), perfomance has always been good.Like I said above, I do like to keep battery degeneration to a minimum by charging the least number of times. I had my forerunner 935 for over 5 years and I plan to match that with my race s (although I have my doubts a oled watch can match a mips watch there). Do have to say, the last time a watch had a new feature that changed the way I sport or do activities was the ambit 3 run that enabled navigatin by following gpx files, so I’m not keen to buy a new watch just because it has some more randomnumber datafield.

@honzas has confirmed that works on his V2

No no no
. I confirmed, that during activity, if you switch from low to highest accuracy GPS, the map is enabled again. But there is no map in low accuracy modes! -
