I have had my Suunto 5 for a few weeks now and like it overall. I set the sleep tracking to start at 11:00 PM and end at 7:30 AM. Last night I took the watch off to take a shower at 9:52 PM, then didn’t put the watch on until just before 11:00 PM.

Now it shows me as having fallen asleep at 9:52 PM and waking up at 8:00 AM.

So, what is the point of setting the sleep tracking hours if it is going to be fooled by taking the watch off for a while before the set start time? Or is there something else I should be doing?

Also, I wish it would give more info on how it determines that my sleep is poor every night. I know I don’t sleep very well but I would like more info.

@pikeviewer the manual says: you need to set the sleep hours the earliest you go to bed and the latest you go out of bed. So based on what I read from your post, it seems you have it wrongly set. Try to think about how your sleeping routine works and adjust it. I hope that helps.

@markytarky I think you are right although I don’t understand why it works that way. I’ll try it and see how well it works.

This bothers me too. I once got up, rode a bike for 2hours, left watch on bike, took a shower and when I picked up watch from the handlebar it said good morning, slept x number of hours, wake up time 2,5h 😄 it got up earlier than usual so my bike ride was in usual sleeping hours… still, too bad it does not know if you are wearing it.

So, I reset my hours of expected sleep and it didn’t change things. I take a shower before going to bed and prefer not to wear the watch in the shower. I showed me as having started sleeping while I was in the shower.

To me, a reason to set the expected sleep times is so it won’t mistaking some inactivity as starting sleep.

I wish someone from Suunto would respond to this.

@pikeviewer it is expected this as you leave the watch with no movement during the sleep hours.

I am not answering as SUUNTO but as a user. What you could do perhaps is to leave the watch at another surface ? Perhaps it depends to that as of vibrations etc.

Another solution is to indicate you wake up earlier to compensate for the sleep.

                Merry Xmas

                  Thanks for your reply.

You seem to be saying that the watch shouldn’t mistake inactivity as sleep if I set the sleep time later. That was my original problem. The watch identified me as falling asleep before my set sleep time. I will go back to setting a later sleep onset time and see if it happens again. I will report back.

So, I reset my sleep hours to 11:00 PM to 8:00 AM. As is my habit I took the watch off to take an evening shower, this time around 9:45 PM. I put the watch back on around 10:15 PM

This morning the watch shows me as having fallen asleep at 9:47.and awake at 8:15 AM

As far as I can tell, setting the sleep hours makes no difference. Is my watch defective or do all Suunto 5 watches do this?

@pikeviewer Set your automatic DND to just before or the same as sleep time and see if that helps. If you have not done a soft reset then try that too. My S5 does not exhibit this behavior.

Thanks Brad, I did a soft reset, then reset both sleep time and auto DND at the same times. I’ll report back on how it goes.

Still not working properly. I set it down at about 9:40 pm, put it back on at 10:10 pm. The sleep hours are set as 10:45 pm-8:am

This morning the watch shows me as having gone to sleep at 9:39 and woken up at 8:20. The 8:20 wake up time is correct but outside of the range that I set. It shows 6:30 hours asleep and 4:11 awake. The total is the exact amount of time from 9:39 to 8:20

Tried one more time. After doing the soft reset and setting the sleep and DNS times as described above, the problem still happens. I took the watch off around 9:30, then put it back on around 10:00 pm. Sleep and DNS times are set at 10:45. This morning the watch shows me as having fallen asleep at 9:34 pm.

I’d rather not do a hard reset and I am doubtful it will help. I figure that if I call Suunto they will want me to do that before considering anything else. This isn’t the main reason I bought the watch but I would like it to work properly. Any other ideas?

I would really like it if someone else could try this to compare.

After doing a soft reset, I set the sleep hours at 10:45 PM to 8:00 AM. Then last night I took the watch off around 9:30 for a half hour. Here is a picture of the morning report in my Suunto app. I’m not sure what other details you would like. The bottom line is that the watch thought I had gone to sleep while the watch was off my wrist even though it was off my wrist outside of sleep tracking hours.

And yes, my sleep is poor. that is why I’m tracking it to see if I can improve how I sleep.

@pikeviewer why take the watch off? Perhaps leave it on and see if the sleep works properly, then we can narrow the issue.

I take it off when I take an evening shower. I know it is waterproof but I prefer to have it off at that time. I will keep it on this evening and see how it does and report back tomorrow. Here is how my watch is set. I tend to not fall asleep until 11:00 PM or later.

                                    Screenshot 2020-12-28 102401.png

I thought that the purpose of setting sleep tracking hours is that sleep will only be tracked during that time.

@pikeviewer Agreed but let’s see if it is a bug or an issue with your watch.

@pikeviewer I have sleeping time set 10:00 pm to 8:00 am. Sometimes, if I sleep longer time and get up later, it tracked my sleeping all this time, for example today it was to 9:33. It is out from set range, but it is true.

How about a filter, like if (HR==0) human = false;? And then don’t track sleep if !human? Is this interfering with something else?
