Charging and Battery Care

Hi, someone knows if there is some technical recommendation concerning the battery charging of our Suunto watches?
I know that for Li-ion batteries it is usually advised to keep the charge level between 50% to 80%-90%, when possible, that is:- avoid to drain it too much below 50% (too often)
- recharge it at 90%, or even better to 80%.
Taking this care should extend the battery life. For example, my Sony Xperia smartphone has a built-in function that optionally can stop the recharging at 80% or 90%.
According to that, I decided to not fully charge my Race, as I see that it reaches a level >90% I remove it from the charger. In any case, I believe it is “not wise” to keep it charging when it has already reached 99%.

@SteM64 I never bother with any tactics to charging. My Suunto 9b battery was as strong after six years as the day purchased.
I’d certainly not think too much about it.

I assume that if there were significant benefits on doing so, a battery care mode would be implemented in our watches. I think that the technology is mature enough that it’s no longer necessary to manually charge between certain amounts. Also, notice that modern Suunto watches (those that have quick charge) slow down charging significantly after reaching 80%

After all these years and countless charging processes, my old Spartan Ultra has no problem with the battery.
Of course, it may be a different type of battery …

1- i think yes, Li-ion batteries lifetime “could” be enhanced with some care, but does it worth the effort ?
2- but i also think that lifetime is linked to full charge number of cyclesphones are globally charged everyday (big picture average), while our watches, let’s assume each week (for the sake of calculation)
Let’s assume 1000 cycles of charge acceptable -->
phone battery can be in acceptable shape for something like 3 years (1000/365 days)
while watch may still be acceptable shape for 7x more --> 21 yearsif my calculation is reflecting something real, i would prefer not to care about charging my watch when i want and/or when i need

yes, all your observations are correct, don’t need to care much about charging!

@Mff73 Also, considering that battery duration has considerably been enhanced with last generation of watches (S9pp < SR < SV), the number of charge cycles his more than divided by 2 compared to previous generations.
