Why can I only sync and save 15 hiking routes to my Suunto Vertical?
The equivalent Garmin Fenix 7 (with 32GB of storage also) has a limit of saving 100 courses/routes on the watch. The Suunto Vertical 15. Quite a big difference. Why?

@neonix This is a general limit since a long time (see e.g. here) and for sure could be updated in the newer watches. On the other hand - would you really need more routes on the watch? Isn’t it enough to have them created in SA and just push to the watch those that are currently needed?

It really is a big limitation for my usage.
When I go for multi-day (10) hiking without possibility to sync with my phone, I need to store one route for each day, some alternative routes in case of problem which prevent me for following my primary itinerary and I also need to store some extra routes for specific point of interest, viewpoint, … 20 routes would be a minimum (I come from a Traverse which don’t have this limitation).

I really hope this number of routes we can store in SV will be increased in a future update 🤞

@sebchastang Curious, why don’t you have the opportunity to sync to your phone, assuming you take that on the hike for photos, etc.

SA works/syncs offline, while Garmin requires an Internet signal to function. You may have more opportunity than you realize.

Everyone suggests to use the phone and sync when needed… Well that makes me rely on two devices instead of one. We are talking about 20-150kb gpx files here, not massive files that take up a lot of space. This limitation makes no sense. And yes, I agree, 15 saved routes is a huge limitation for my use when I go on 1-3 week back to back hiking trips in the Norwegian mountains, and I want alternate routes to choose from saved and ready to go also.

Preferably I also want the watch to show the routes in the watch based on distance to the route, not alphabetically. This is just so great with Garmin watches. And there is no reason why it cant be improved on the Vertical.

Garmin doesnt need internet to sync routes to the watch. That is false. You can simply push this directly from Connect or Explore apps via bluetooth directly to the watch without any internet or phone coverage. Explore also allows you to create routes with offline topo maps saved on your phone, so you dont really need phone coverage at all to look at the map, find and make routes, and sync to the watch.

@TrailEyes I don’t like to be phone dependant when hiking/trekking.
I only use my phone to take some photos and send text messages to inform people about my location/situation.
I also save phone battery in case of emergency (I don’t want to waste battery for syncing devices).
It is much more comfortable to have all routes in the watch.

But thanks for the tip 👍, it is good to know I can sync without Internet connection

My sincere apologies for the mistake. Every time I’ve been out of signal range or in airplane mode, I hit a lot of walls trying to use Garmin Connect, including “An error has occured” messages when trying to access courses. I didn’t realize that other people may have different/better experiences using the app offline.

Like for many other limitations that were hardware limits in previous watches (number of S+ apps and guides, maximum length of an activity, and so on), some are remaining from the old models. I will report this to Suunto.
