If ascending, the initial data screen shows gain in elevation. The problem is on net descent: the elevation change is clipped at 0.

Do you mean you use the default Mountaineering sport mode ?
If yes, it is by its own design, the first screen is not set with descent data field.
You can/need to create your own customized sport mode in the app to add your needed data fields.

(re)creating a new sport mode is partly helpful but flawed. It is possible to create a new data screen - that’s great. However it does not simply replace the nominal initial data screen. It appears to retain the old data screen (or something very much like that). In practice it’s confusing to have two similar data-field screens prior to the Map screen. It also eliminates the elevation graph display. In at least some sport modes it also appears to append another screen relating to ‘lap’ data.
Trying to create a new sport mode based on the “unspecified sport” is really crazy with the numerous screens. For that it (and some other sports) it would be useful to be able to turn off one or more screens.
Finally it “would be nice” to be able to edit created sport modes rather than having to start all over from scratch.

@dunots But why are you using unspecified sport to create a sport mode for mountaineering?

you can create a very own personalized sport mode (based on the real activity you want Suunto to store it (Mountaineering in your case).
You can add or delete screens, choosing from the different screen type available (data screens, or graphs, or laps, or … (do some trials 😉 )
It is not perfect, but you can almost do what you would need.
The default data screens, at the very first step, is what it is, click on each data field to change it, change screen, delete some, etc…

This is only an example of how the personalization is limited to the opening screen.

As far as I have been able to determine, only the initial screen is editable. Other screens associated with a given sport mode are inserted or removed with no control by the user. If I’m missing something I’d be delighted to learn otherwise. The instructions that you’ve linked to say nothing about these other screens that are mysteriously and uncontrollably added and removed (which is what I observe happening on my SR).

@dunots you can create more than one screen in a custom sport. And what are these other screens you see? Map? Climb guidance? One S+ app?

What do you mean? You can customize all screens (or displays, as they are called in Suunto app) with data fields. You can add and remove them as you like. Maybe you missed the delete display button at the bottom of the screen? Swipe left or right to get to the screen you need to customize.

Ahhh!! Ok, it seems I was misinterpreting the (to me obscure) meaning of the button[s]. I will try re-customizing. Thanks for your patience with me!
