Hello guys how you doing ?

Got the Suunto Ocean 2 months ago now, tried it only while diving but i’m using it for different sports now and i have an issue mostly for snorkeling

First i’m all the time waiting for a gps signal at the beginning before starting but (doing snorkeling almost everyday now) and not even once i got the path i’ve done in the water, tells me i’m doing 0m even tho i stay in the water for more than 1 hour, tells me the path when i’m going out tho, just walking from the beach to the car…

Also doing snorkeling (so swimming) my watch think i’m diving under water at 0.3m so just swimming trigger the watch with a dive and tells me after 1hour doing snorkeling that i dived 150 times and i was just swimming but my hand was going 0.3m deep… i don’t find a way to change that and on the suunto website they say i counts as a dive after 1m deep

I’ve tried to reset (software) the watch (pressing 15 sec the top button?) But it doesn’t work either i’m doing a manual reboot but it doesn’t fix anything

Could someone tells me what i’m doing wrong ?
    Sorry for my english

    Have a great day
    Cheers
    Yohann

@Yo_Han to reset Ocean you must press all three buttons for 12 seconds (not just the top one).

Before start snorkeling activity, roll down and check the GPS is turned on at pre-snorkeling screen.

At pre-diving screen set the auto start depth to 1.2m/4ft or deeper.

Today there’s no option to set the auto start to snorkeling or diving. It always start automatically in diving mode, thus imitates the snorkeling activity manually.

I hope Suunto improves the firmware to allow the user to choose.

@diogao13 hey diogao ! Thanks for replying to me !
I’ve always checked the gps mode before starting snorkeling and it is always on and i’m waiting for the green arrow aswell before doing the activities, gps is working on the ground but not in the water

Also for the depth i’ve already put 1.5m depth before starting a dive as just swimming in a swimming pool was anoying but for the snorkeling it is still start at 0.3m

I’ve done the reset or the watch i’ll see if this change anything but so far the snorkeling mode is really bad for me

            Thank you guys for replying
            Wish you a good day

              Hi there !
If anyone has any tips or something, i’ve done snorkeling again today, with gps on, i waited for the green arrow at the beginning but couldn’t as usual get any path that i’ve done while snorkeling (looks like there is an issue with the gps in the water)

Also for my second issue, that the dives (for snorkeling) starts at 30cm (0.3m) so i’m doing 150 dives with 1 hour snorkeling… just by swimming
I’ve set in the dive settings 1.5m depth to start a dive like someone mentionned it

Any tips would be gladly appreciated
(I’ve done a reset aswell of the watch ((soft reset))
              Thanks
              Yohann

yes, under water there is no GPS reception possibly. the radio frequency does not penetrate water. This is why the Suunto Ocean is using acceleration and roration measurement to track your dive route. this works pretty well.

                just to check:
you have “dive route” enabled in the options?
and you are viewing the dive details, not just the map overview?

Hi Yohann, I also answered you in Reddit but I’ll write here too so maybe it could help someone else 🙂

I think it’s more an issue with snorkeling than with the Ocean.

I originally purchased a Vertical, and had the exact same issue with snorkeling.

Then I returned it and got the Ocean since I plan on starting scuba diving anyway, and have been using the freediving activity even if what I’m doing is more like snorkeling / duck diving.

Using freediving, we get the dives AND the gps / accelerometer route we did.

@flobby hey mate ! I replied on reddit aswell haha !
Thanks i’ll try as soon as possible the freediving activity, you can actually do some settings with it which is not possible with the snorkeling one

I’ve seen screenshot of people using the ocean and doing spearfishing and getting their gps track, dives, time and all kind of useful informations so i guess you are right and it is the snorkeling activity that has an issue

                    Thanks again !

I do have dive route enable and also the dives information, the watch is triggered every time since it thinks at 0.3m i’m doing a dive so i have arround 150 dives for 1 hour snorkeling each time just by swimming
