@maszop As far as I can remember, on my Vertical, when the optical heart rate is enabled and the watch loses the signal from the strap during an activity, it switches to the optical sensor. But I need to double-check, because those saying otherwise here are starting to make me doubt. (I think I even decided to completely disable the optical heart rate sensor during activities to avoid that kind of annoyance.)

@James-Eastwood I’m sorry, I was mislead by the website cross promoting an optical arm monitor as well…

No, it does not, unfortunately. I just double checked. Once you start an activity, there is no way to change sensors, HR or otherwise. I’ve had it happen a number of times where the battery on my external HR sensor dies or stops working for whatever reason. You’re then left with no HR data for the remainder of the activity. It definitely should fall back to the OHR, but doesn’t.

I tie this in with the general failing of how Suunto handles external sensors. Hopefully the ability to change sensors mid-activity will come along with the ability to have multiple sensors of the same type.

@James-Eastwood Will not work. My friend has a band like that. HRV only works when measured with their app. When connected to the watch, HRV measurement does not work.

@Maryn @far-blue says he has one and it works. Now I don’t know what to believe 😆

@duffman19 Yeah, I was wrong. I tested it myself yesterday. Thanks, guys — I was getting annoyed having to turn off wrist HR before every workout since it kept turning itself back on. I guess it’s better this way with ZoneSense anyway.

@James-Eastwood I can say something about this model:

                https://www.coospo.com/products/hw9-armband-heart-rate-monitor

HW9 doesnt work with zonesense despite the fact that it has HRV in the specifications.

PS. Sorry I thought you meant an optical sensor. 🙄

@Maryn But it’s still just an optical sensor, which ZoneSense doesn’t work with.

Just to be crystal clear, it is this model.

                    https://www.coospo.com/products/h6-chest-strap-heart-rate-monitor

It is not optical, it is not an arm band.

I was wrong!!! Garmin HRM-Pro will send two R-R streams to different watches. I tried this yesterday and both watches gave identical results. I started the Race S about 20 sec after the Vertical. Images are Vertical then Race S.

Tried again with the Coospo H6 but with with the wrist based HR disabled, and ZoneSense worked.

I will ensure that wrist HR is turned off for most activities by default.

No reason to turn off wrist HR! If paired to a belt and the belt is put on prior to opening the exercise in the watch the default is belt. I never turn off my OHR and always use a belt for running and ski touring.

Good to hear! Your original assertion was a bit confounding to me, as I could not deduce how one would be able to differentiate between the signals, and whether other companies had a similar problem. While the more ideal solution for me was “Brad was wrong,” I couldn’t make that claim not having experience with the Garmin. Happy you found the two streams to both give R-R info!

@raven My original answer was based on what I read some time ago, either here or somewhere else. I had to test to make sure and needed a new battery so finally got done.

A pity that Suunto’s own belt only support one channel, as even Garmin’s cheapest option the HRM DUAL supports two…

The Suunto belt is the only one I can wear for ultras. I would prefer the size remains the same. To cram more channels in is fine as long as the size and weight do not change. That is far more important to me.

@Brad_Olwin with the Polar H10 chest strap, I get chafing during longer workouts (>2 hours), usually in the area where the sensor is placed. I’m wondering if the Suunto strap would be any different. After your comment, I think I’ll go ahead and buy it. 🙂

@Maryn OT: I use electrodes contact gel to reduce chafing and this works for me pretty good.

@Mitch9 I used ultrasound gel, but after 2 hours it didn’t help much.

Is there any plan to license out (or make freely available) ZoneSense? I would love to use it when cycling (indoors or out) but it’s not practical to use my watch.
