I am new to this forum so I apologize before hand if these topics have been discussed.

I am interested in the Suunto Vertical and the Fenix 7X, which both appear quite well made and comparable. The Fenix flashlight is a desirable option but the fewer SV metrics and ridiculous battery life are also desirable. The fewer SV’s metrics will serve my needs better. The Fenix appears like overkill that would make my head spin.
In addition, the SV just looks better.

REI sells both watches. Reviews for both show the Garmin watches with ratings of 4.5+ but the SV only shows 3.3. Given all the raving about the SV on other forums, can anyone explain the low reviews?

I currently have a Fenix 6 and it is quite well built but the lack of touch screen is a pain in the ass. My previous watch was a Galaxy 5 Pro which I love but they tend to break at 1.5 to 2 years and the battery life is not good.

There are many watch options for the Galaxy and Garmin including customizable faces. Are there plans to rectify this issue?

Since the Vertical was released only 16 months ago, will this watch be the Suunto standard bearer moving forward?

I am thinking of buying both, wearing each for a month, then returning the lesser of the 2 watches.

Thanks ahead for the help but I need it because $800 - $1,000 is alot of money.

Suunto now offers to install watch faces in the app so it seems that this will be more flexible than in the past. See https://www.suunto.com/de-de/Support/faq-articles/suunto-app/watch-faces-are-now-downloadable-from-suuntoplus-store-in-suunto-app/

The Vertical steel is only 499 €, the matte finish looks very good in my opinion, and you get 10 % off at Suunto if you sign up for the newsletter. Brings the price down to 449 € (and Suunto shipped to Germany in less than 24 h free of charge). As much as I would like to have a Ti bezel (lighter), I don’t want solar.

From reading your post it looks like you have made up your mind already: the Vertical suits you better. If I remember correctly the Vertical review by 5krunner was not mediocre.

The problem of one watch having lots of sales is that not all the buyers know exactly what they are buying. I mean, you are buying a high end sports watch and you rate it with 3 stars or less because of the watchfaces? I would be more preoccupied about the metrics, navigation capabilities, accuracy, battery life, etc. If I want watchfaces I would buy a smartwatch.

But anyway, the SV is a rock solid piece of gear, I have mine since February and I couldn’t be happier. Navigation is excellent, instant pace and elevation are spot on, GPS accuracy is the reference in the market, battery life is also the reference in the market, the app is far better that Garmin’s or Coros’ (I have used both)…Regarding watch faces, now they are unlinked from the watch firmware, which should make that more or them will be available (from two firmware versions before they are already more customizable).

Suunto is working hard in order to improve the watches and multiple sensors seems that will come too (here Suunto is behind Garmin and Coros).

And one of the biggest things, that only Suunto has is ZoneSense, which in my opinion is a killer if you want to train correctly/seriously.

Here’s a big compilation of reviews from when the Vertical first launched:

              https://forum.suunto.com/topic/8866/published-reviews-megalist?_=1728642393453#

They were overall very glowing reviews, and changes like a faster UI, ZoneSense, and customizable watchfaces have only made it better in the year and a half since it came out.

IMO those are two different “universes”. You maybe won’t be too happy with Suunto, if watchface customisation or mainly smartphone features are of main importance for you. Suunto offers a “purer” experience, which makes you decide your way of training, supporting you with helpful metric like TSB etc. Garmin has more features but the whole ecosystem (starting with the pure numbers of different models 😱) is much more confusing and I didn’t find it too helpful.
