Screen stays on during activity with navigation, even with AOD off
-
Hi everyone,
I’ve noticed that during trail running activities on my Suunto Race, the screen stays on the whole time when I follow a route, even though I have Always-On Display (AOD) turned off in both general and sport mode settings.
This only happens when I activate route navigation. In normal watch mode, the screen turns off correctly when I lower my wrist. But once navigation starts, it stays on for the entire activity—even in situations where visibility isn’t critical.
Additionally, I was running a route in reverse (starting from the end), and I suspect this may have triggered a “recalculation” mode or caused the device to keep the display on permanently.
I would prefer to use wrist-gesture-only activation for battery saving and night running, but this behavior prevents it. Is this an intentional feature or a bug? Are there any settings or workarounds to ensure the screen turns off during activities even when following a route?
My settings:
AOD: OFF
Raise to wake: ON
Thanks in advance!

@Luis-Andés-Olmedo, I am pretty sure I have experienced this issue once when using my Suunto Race in a 100k ultramarathon. At some point there was a slight course change vs. the planned route, which I think had caused the watch to briefly go off-route and then the route reversed. That part of the race course was an out-and-back section, so it incorrectly locked to the return part of the out-and-back section but tracked it in reverse (isn’t that messed up!). Suunto’s route-auto-reverse logic causes more issues than it solves in my opinion.
From that point the watch display turned on and remained being constantly on for a couple of hours until I passed the out-and-back section. I was really worried about the watch battery running out and not making it to the end of the race. Also, perhaps what triggered this condition is the fact that I had waypoints for aid-stations on the route. I think the watch logic expected distance to waypoint to reduce and turn the display off when I passed the waypoint, but instead distance to waypoint increased because the route was reversed, so the waypoint notification never cleared and remained visible at the bottom of the display.

@sky-runner thanks!!! seems to be a related issue…
This was my route and the watch started to have that erroneous behaviour when at the point that I’ve highlighted in red, I followed the route in reverse. From there the screen was always ON and the elevation profile was not reversed as the route.
