Great performance—you probably had it set to “always off.” How often did you look at the map screen? My wife is worried that with “always off,” but if she checks the map more often, it won’t last 30 hours…

Absolutely will last 30 hours. I did have AoD turned off (what you’re calling always off). I spent a lot more time on the climb guidance screen than the map screen but it still only dropped my battery about 50% over the 35 hour period.

The solution is to set the map style to high contrast. That keeps the screen mostly black so the battery impact from looking at the map remains low.

In my experience Vertical 2 does last projected 60-65 hours even when using the best accuracy with navigation and high contrast maps. I tend to look at maps fairly often. Most of the time I am either on map or vertical profile screen.

Where was your post about the climb guidance? I want to bump and upvote it!

The screens just don’t make sense to me. I had two different zoom levels that showed the same estimated ascent/descent, one screen that showed my total time elapsed, and then the one I remember you also complaining about the lowest level where it shows current climb but you can’t see the ascent/descent because it’s covered by the data field.

Seems like really basic stuff 😞

Off-topic question, if you don’t mind.
I’m curious about how you managed your sleep/rest during this 35-hour run.

Did you take any planned sleep breaks along the way? If so, how did you divide your sleep/rest periods?

If you don’t mind sharing, I’d really appreciate knowing how you managed it. Of course, no worries if it’s something you’d rather keep private.

@sky-runner Yeah, that’s how I set it up for her; I’m just gathering information from others. She basically keeps the map on all the time—she has a terrible sense of direction, but she wants to run ultratrails 😂. Some races here have quite a few turns, but she definitely doesn’t want to go back to Enduro3 … thx 👍

Yes, it is a basic stuff and it is just broken. My observation is that if there is an aid station at a turn around point it is impossible to create a single waypoint for it. You try to add a waypoint at turnaround, but it always creates two waypoints that are very close to each other, so you don’t see them as two waypoints but see only one. But the climb guidance screen sees them as two waypoints and that makes zoom levels broken - basically you get two zoom levels that are exactly the same.

Normally there supposed to be 5 zoom levels in total, starting from the most zoomed in:

                  1. single climb or descent. This one uses the old layout where the remaining climb / descent is at the bottom and obscured by the blue field. It is mind boggling that Suunto engineers decided that it is good to leave it like that - with its main function broken - the amount of remaining climb no longer visible.

2, 3, 4) if there are waypoints it can show up to 1 upcoming waypoint, or 2 or 3 waypoints. The distance at the bottom corresponds to the last visible waypoint. So basically you can see how far is the next closest waypoint, or the second closest, or the third closest. But as I said, this can be broken because of duplicating waypoints. If there are no waypoints, the watch can also zoom based on the distance, although I generally don’t find that useful.

                  1. the most zoomed out view is the entire remaining route and the distance shows the distance to the end of the route.

So basically, by zooming the climb guidance screen we can use it as a poor substitute for Garmin “Up Ahead” feature, but with no waypoints names. It would be very logical to also show waypoint names there - the name of the last visible waypoint matching the distance at the bottom. Well, maybe in another two years we’ll get that.

@sky-runner what’s interesting is I didn’t have any out/back type sections so I have no idea why I was getting duplicate screens.

I will still take this over the Garmin version implemented in my Enduro but Suunto’s version is so close to being just perfect.

@Kraisun-Tunta no sleep breaks. I detox from caffeine for about a month prior to the race so that overnight any sort of coffee, caffeinated gels, etc pack a little extra punch.

That race was really hard and had me chasing cut offs which meant I didn’t have a lot of time to be resting at aid stations (even when I have time, I usually try not to sleep).

@stromdiddily Thanks for sharing! That’s really helpful. No sleep breaks at all — that’s impressive
And carrying whiskey for snakebite… now that’s proper ultra preparation
