Sweet baby Jesus! It arrived, it arrived! Has been traveling a few blocks around my house for the past seven hours, but the snail mail finally decided to crawl in and make a drop.

Yes, a special watch for a very special person. Me! 😄 Sometimes Amazon is capable of pleasantly surprising their customers with early delivery.

@Bulkan I suppose I will have quite a few things to say, but for now I have a small but important gift to the forum faring public. I put the new shiny Suunto 7 to the test at the gym… 70 minutes of various cross-training.

TLDR: I’m quite amazed by accuracy of the S7 wrist sensor (yes, I’m a poster boy for OHR in general, but still). It performed far better than I thought it would. Unfortunately, far better is still not good enough for where it matters. Rowing and spin bike seem to be generally OK as is stretching and bodyweight, especially if you don’t do anything too intensive. Dynamic stretching and mobility drills were problematic. And S7 totally dropped the ball on free weights. No miracles there, as expected. Given that it generally lags heart rate spikes and misses peaks, I wouldn’t do anything plyometric like box jumps with it either.

In the blue corner, aka on my right hand, is Suunto 9 connected to Polar H10, all latest firmware. This is a formidable and well established opponent and arguably a benchmark of accuracy. In the red corner is our challenger, Suunto 7, relying only on its wrist OHR smarts and some dark magic:

                Without further ado, fight!
                https://quantified-self.io/user/BwL3jSkSnUXc0PCudEMRoqT8MI93/event/gCenpbsAcwllpacr7yAm

Little notes. I took manual laps (see these at the end of comparison page):

                • Lap 1: Rowing (Concept 2 Model D rower, 28-30 strokes/min, max resistance): this was basically steady state rowing, nothing fancy
                • Lap 2: Spin bike (no name Chinese piece of iron, 48 lbs flywheel): I did three surges. One while seated, the other standing up pedaling, and the third one in aerodynamic position
                • Lap 3: A set of several bodyweight exercises, executed fast… Leg raises followed by push-ups followed by squats, plank, and more push-ups
                • Lap 4: Mobility drills: basically putting all my joints, from head to toe, one by one, through their range of motion
                • Lap 5: Dynamic stretching: bouncy, fast kicks, bends, and stuff
                • Lap 6: Static stretches: about 14-15 stretches performed for 1 min to the pain at level 6-7 (on 10 point scale), followed by 30 sec rest
                • Lap 7: Free weights – a few sets of bench dumbbells, biceps curls, and kettlebell swings. Do notice I waited until both watches settled on roughly the same heart rate before picking up weights
                • Lap 8: Cooldown walking around

Look at the numbers and draw your own conclusions.

I’ll probably use S7 for my recovery rowing and spin bikes sessions. Will need to test more for its suitability for the type of mobility/stretching work I do. The difference is material absolute numbers wise, but much less so once you look at cardio load and averages from session. It is definitely no go for kettlebell/plyometric HIIT, heavy bag, and weights.

Tomorrow I will do some running. Based on what I’ve seen so far I expect it to perform great OHR wise. Too bad it doesn’t have ad-hoc intervals or running power.

                  Google Fit vs. Suunto App

In Suunto App I can choose to connect to Google Fit. I think, this is to sync the recorded activities to Google Fit. Does Suunto App, which is probably running instantly in the background, collect heart rate and steps and sync it to Google Fit? When connected?

In Google Fit I can choose to record my heart rate, steps and activities (last with or without gps). I deactivated the recording of activities, because the activity is synced from Suunto App. It would be no problem, because Fit’s activities without gps are overwritten by activities synced from third party apps.

Can someone say, if the steps are recorded twice, if I activate the connection to Google Fit in Suunto App?

                  Thanks for reading!

@pilleus the Suunto app only pushes workouts.

The fit app does the rest natively.

Even if you had 20 devices for step counting and used them all Google fit has a clever way j can explain technically if needed that would not register double steps etc

tonight I slept with the S7. Before I went to bed I activated DND and gesture off. It is supoused that google fit may reflect dream time? it’s empty 😞

also, i’m doing some battery test using it as a watch. In my test it drop 3% per hour but the best part is that if I activate ambient display using default suunto watchface, battery also drains 3% per hour. This is very good!

during past night sleep (from 0h to 8:30am) it only drop 10%

@jorgefd78 Google Fit device app doesn’t track sleep time. You’d need another app for that like Sleep Android, or another device that does and syncs to Fit.

That said, all tracking capability in Fit is really beginning and end and two charts built from them, for duration and schedule. I decided to do it manually after trying several options.

You mean Theater Mode, a small watch icon in settings pulldown? Just making sure for others, who might be new to Wear OS and jumping around watch settings disabling gestures.

What does this (settings - connectivity) mean? Not clear in German language. If I deactivate it, GPS of the watch is deactivated or the connected GPS of the smartphone? 🤔

@pilleus I think Wear OS will always try to get a location fix from a phone if it’s connected. Otherwise, it’s using embedded GPS. Disabling it will disable location services, period.

I did an activity this morning, in common settings connection to Google Fit activated, even 2 hours after the end of the activity nothing is shown in Google Fit. 🤔

@pilleus Suunto app pushes workout to Fit on the watch that then in theory syncs it to Fit cloud/mobile app.

It didn’t work in my case yesterday either, but apparently I had Google Fit connection disabled in Suunto app (had issues with Fit integration to begin with, nearly went for a full watch reset until “File bug report” menu item in Wear OS magically reestablished connection to Fit… Go figure!)

Welcome to Google Fit! They don’t really care about it. I heard last year the service was down for months and nobody at Google seemed to be bothered. I wouldn’t be surprised if the whole team is on the way out, with Fitbit people taking over.

I never had issues with SyncMyTracks and Notify&fitness. Correct sync and an icon of the app in the listed activity in Google Fit.

Steps and heart rate are available and up to date.

Until now no sync through Suunto App. Not to Google Fit and not to Strava. QS synced 6 hours ago after storing the activity on the watch and syncing it to Suunto App.

                                            Very strange. 🤔

Edit: Now I imported the fit file from Suunto app manually in Strava and synced it with SyncMyTracks to Google Fit. It was listed immediately in Google Fit with no errors.

I think Suunto App is the problem - on the watch or on the smartphone or in the cloud.
