Next S9 generation without map feature
-
As you can see in this video, the map feature is not planned for the next version of the S9…
I am very surprised to learn this because it is a feature I expected in the next S9. Am I alone?
-
@frederick-rochette while as you said it, its the next s9 not an s11 or something to me it sounds reasonable if it does not have maps.
Suunto does not follow the practice of one watch having everything in.
for example the s9 does not have a coach nor a improved step counter.
To enable map features in their platform takes a lot of work and that is the reason it was not done by polar or coros so far.
Garmin has the privilege / tech knowledge of having their native navigation from actual navigation (GPS devices).
From a tech (HW/SW) perspective it’s very very hard todo mapping and navigation let aside other technicalities such as map providers , CPU cost, memory cost , stability cost.
To my understanding it’s ok if the next s9 does not have maps. It’s the next S9 not an S11 or S13 or S7. When the time comes we can ask the same question.
-
@frederick-rochette I would be fun, but I’m ok with it if it is not available.

Please don’t use S13,
13 can be considered as the letter B,
S13 = SB in Chinese background it means dumb ass or something like it.
-
@dimitrios-kanellopoulos thanks for your very quick answerI said the next S9 but I wanted to say the replacement of the S9 with the current features + map. Don’t know the future name but only what is interesting to have soon (max 1year)…it’s only my opinion.

Honestly, guys, I’m not sure why the obsession with the maps. I had Fenix 6x and never used it properly. I think the basic is to have correctly working route navigation with turns and WP or both, good pop-ups, good alert vibration or tone, etc. Then you don’t need the map, it’s too small anyway to see something.
-
I agree that maps are generally unusable in such small screens, but, some basic map features could be included in the display, for example roads, trails, rivers etc. That could be helpful.
-
@prenj maps can be usable if they are like the s7 + heatmaps.
Zoom with pinch etc.

I’ve used it quite a bit in the forrest near me when trying to explore trails I haven’t tried before. It’s a nice and simple way of figuring out if I’m still on said trail as most of them are on the map.

@zhang965 Not to mention the triskaidekaphobia in some markets that precludes “13th” floors in buildings.
-
@fenr1r Τρεις-και-δεκαφοβία you mean right ?

That’s the bunny.
(Is it even a thing in Greece? Or Someone Else’s Problem?)
-
@fenr1r nah no prob with that in Greece. ITs a western civil thing. right ?

So I gather (and Βικιπαίδεια “confirms”).

I guess it will be Suunto 888 for the Chinese speaking countries

For hiking in the mountains I’d still prefer paper map in most cases to get an overview. Of course I wouldn’t object to having them in the watch

Map and compass should be considered essential regardless of the watches capabilities (depending on how well you know the area obviously).
