Hello dear Suunto lovers. I left my beloved 9 peak titanium at a park on Wednesday and after panicking and frantically looking everywhere it appears to be gone. I’ve made a police report just in case it’s turned in and have talked to Suunto chat and they’re not sure they can help. I’ve posted to Craigslist and Facebook hoping some kind soul will return it.

Do you think there is a way I can track my 9 Peak via app or otherwise? Dear Suunto representative if you read this, do I have any recourse or way to trace its location?? I would hate to just call this a total loss, especially since I just paid so much for it!

    Thank you!
    Chris

@chris-white There is no active Find My Watch feature.
You can try if going back to the place and open Suunto App hoping it connects the watch over bluetooth if it’s still somewhere in the grass, but if someone took it there is no way to find it.

You can find the serialnumber of your watch in the app.
I don’t know that if the other person starts to use the watch for himself, the serialnumber of the watch is send to Suunto with activity sync.
Although I highly doubt that Suunto is allowed to give you the information if they see the watch connecting.

So I think you can only hope a honest person finds it and turns it in.

@surfboomerang crap I hope you’re not right! I just did a ton of research and it seems even Garmin cannot disclose GPS data info legally. I would love a Suunto representative to weigh in on this!!!

@chris-white it cannot be tracked because it doesn’t have cellular function. I hope Suunto make verification process when changing accounts.

@soojong-moon And in a case that verification is not correct, Suunto send “New update available” and disable a watch 🙂

@soojong-moon but isn’t it connected to a global satellite network in order to use GPS? Can’t it be pinged and found somehow? I understand the ethics and legality of them not being able to legally provide citizens’ locations to law enforcement, but just logistically it seems like it should be super easy to find with my serial number, especially if someone resets and uses the app. They must track app metrics and serials right? Damnit!

Damnit! I basically realize now that this watch is totally untraceable and that I need to buy another one and just chain it to my body. Let this be a lesson to everyone. There’s nothing these smartphone companies and legally or ethically to do help without overstepping privacy laws. Unfortunately for me, this means I’m saving up for a new Suunto 😢 oh well, it’s worth it.

If any suunto employee has other advice I would love to hear it.

@chris-white Probably not much you can do. Someone would have to have a charger to use the watch. I do not know where you live but putting a message on Strava may not be a bad idea, here we have a lot of lost and found on Strava.

just copy your reply, hit refresh button and it will work.

…I’m sorry for your loss! I hate losing things or damaging my stuff, especially even more when it is new!

I think this person will be able to use your watch without any restrictions. This person can also see your recent activities and will be able to see your start and end points and if this person is honest, he/she could drop it at a close police station.
But I’ve heard several stories where people found a device, couldn’t track it down or did not know how to and are now an undeserved owner of a top notch device 😟 the manufacturer is not allowed to release personal data at all…

@freeheeler awwww thanks for your understanding. I was really falling in love with this thing haha. I’m still holding out hope that someone from Suunto will get ahold of me and say there’s a way to help, but like you’re saying, all the research I’m doing says that they smart watch companies cannot share tracking data of individual devices. 🤔 Otherwise , I think my best bet is to buy another but this time keep it close!

The GPS on your watch is just a radio frequency receiver, emphasis on the word receiver. The watch just listens to a time signal sent from satellites, nothing else. None of the signals can be “targeted” to a single device and not any plot twist in C.S.I can change this into a two way ping.

On the other hand, the only transmitter on your watch is Bluetooth, which is very low power and very short range signal, a few meters maximum. You have paired your smartphone with the watch and the only way to detect your watch would be somehow getting physically close enough to the watch and see on Suunto App that the connection is established.

@brunoh Suunto should create a database of stolen/lost watches. With proof of ownership(invoice) and police report, like I’ve wrote,”New update avaliable” and disables a watch 🙂 It will bot going to be returned but at least something.

@brunoh thank you, this is great information. I worried that was the case, that it was a one way connection with the satellites. Still I have to wonder, wouldn’t suunto be able to see if someone used my watch with the suunto app somewhere in the world besides on my phone. It must show serial number on the app. Also, shouldn’t they be able to see that serial as “active” in their global GPS system? I feel like they have more capabilities than they can legally disclose or actually utilize.

the possibility for sure would be there. but it is illegal and in a majority of use cases this is good how it is. only in case when you loose the watch or it gets stolen.
I would talk to your insurance and check possibilities.
I’ve unchecked the box “damage or loss of electronic equipment”, hence I know I have to buy it new. But my insurance at least offers this service. Similar as @Brad_Olwin suggested 👍
