As many have pointed out already, it’s kind of wierd to add “peak” in the watch name when it doesn’t have barometer. All other suunto peak watches up until now had barometer. I will not call it cheating but some buyers might feel so after they buy it. Maybe it’s time for suunto to invent better naming scheme for watches?

Otherwise, watch looks nice, has good set of features and is super light. To me this watch looks like Suunto 9 (no baro) without touch screen and with full set of buttons (non baro 9 has been discontinued right?). Market will tell if that is enough to be a success story.

I’d say the price is too high for basically a facelift of a watch introduced 5 years ago, but it seems lately people are willing to hand out crazy amounts of money for sport watches and mobile phones, so taking that in consideration, it’s probably just right. Suunto 9 price has dropped to just about this price in the end if I’m not mistaken.

I really like it! I don’t do mountain sports l and really like a lightweight Suunto for training and all day use. The old S5 is my all day companion but is a bit “heavy” and the new S5 really looks better in the office!

For those of you discussing the lack of the barometer, the 5Peak does a much better job than the 5 for ascent/descent. On larger hills I found it works fairly well, on small hills it is not as good. This is the first watch without a barometer that I would be ok with in the mountains. I think Suunto did a great job working on extracting the vertical data from GPS positioning.

@brad_olwin is this algorithm coming to S9 via firmware update?

I was excited when i found out about S5Peak. But now when i read specification, i am disapointed. With name peak i expected S5 hardware + at least barometer. But it looks like only benefit compared to S5 is OTA updates and lower weight. But battery in in-time mode is 2 days less. Glass material is plastic. And price is higher than S5. Water resistance dropped from 50 to 30m rating. So in the end it is just worst watch for higher price. Really good work Suunto!

I agree, I am a Suunto fan, but I think “peak” is raising expectations.
For me it is somehow like a branding, like cars have with AMG, M-Tech or Cupra.

@dulko79 To be fair, most (or maybe all) of the photos in his review are the lifestyle images supplied by Suunto, so they probably look more professional than a typical reviewer taking shots with his camera phone.
