How to manually lap when swimming?

Hey folks,

The auto lap detection of pool swimming doesn’t work well for me and usually gives me extra 300 - 500m every 1.5KM actual swim.

I’m wondering if I can manually lap after touching the wall.

The upper button is for pause/ stop the entire activity, the middle one is for flipping pages, and the lower one is for lapping over time rather than distance…

Is there anything I missed? How do you guys nail it?

@hankwang I think you haven’t missed anything. You can do manual laps though and then edit the distance in post.
Or even create a structured workout with the same functionality with some additional info that you pre program.

I used to do manual laps with the lower button on my S9 while swimming in a 25 meters pool, every complete lap ( 50 meters) but it was distracting at least for me, as still I had to be counting laps and when you’re going for long swim intervals, it can get tricky and easy to forget on what lap you’re on or if your have pressed the lap button already or not . Also you still have to do the math at the end to edit the distance in SA of what you really swam.

I’m more of the idea that your watch should not get in the way while doing the workout.

Tips for getting better measurements are :
A) make sure you streamline enough time after the turn at the wall, usually 2 or 3 secs work, you can verify depending on your swim technique .

B) after reaching the wall, turning and streamlining , perform the first stroke with the hand where you have the watch on, this helps the watch know better you’re restarting swimming after the turn.

These two tips are for the automatic interval distance without manual lapping.

In my case, In the end, due to S9 not having drill mode and learning of swim styles (teach the watch how I swim each style, and I do all four styles regularly ), I got myself an ambit 3 peak and it was a great addition to my swimming in the pool, relying on the automatic interval distance for the most part, with a few errors here and there but not as bad as the S9.

@herlas You can’t turn the automatic off on Suunto Vertical. So if you manually lap do you get autolaps and manual laps recorded. I have the same issue that brief rests/turns are added to my speed and this adds up over the workout to reduced pace. I’d just like to see my pace more accurately.
