With the ability to use offline maps, the Vertical would make for a great golf watch. Has anyone tried this?

@MacSpikes Please no! I would prefer these types of bells and whistles be left to Garmin watches and their everything under the kitchen sink approach to their UI. 😐

Nothing against golf…just, you know. Most people prefer the clean simplicity of Suunto, so I would hope they dont change their brand attributes.

        Past Suuntos: X-Lander/Observer/T6/X9/X10/X6HR/CORES/Ambits/Spartan/9P/9PP Ti/Vertical Ti

        Current: Suunto Race Ti

Past other GPS watches: Polar Vantage V; Garmin 6X Pro Solar; Coros Vertix 2

@MacSpikes I know next to nothing about golf, but I’d like to learn more. What would you expect from a decent golf watch other than maps?

I took a look at a local golf club in Suunto’s maps. I can see the fairways, so that’s a plus…

            Compasses: M-311, A-10, SK-7
            Diving: Finnlight Navy 90, Vyper
Sports: Metron, S7, S9B and Vertical

Unfortunately to be able to compete with the golf watches that are out there you need far more than just a map of a golf course.
Effectively the topo maps are pretty worthless for golf by themselves.

Ideally the course needs to be remapped and at the very least you need distance to front/middle/back of green, distance to pin - and ideally should be able to do this for all hazards on the course - so a view of the hole would also be good.
Then ideally should be able to track the distance of your shot, record how many shots and putts taken and then have a scorecard of some sort.
Ideally you should also have a tournament mode so that certain features can be disabled so can still use while playing a tournament.

Then you can come onto the serious features i.e. tracking the lay of each shot, swing details, green contours, the ability to include play like distances (so taking grade of course, wind, weather, pressure into account) and get suggestions for your club.

Seriously this would take a massive amount of investment and would be competing in areas against a host of watches that are extremely embedded. Garmin offers a range of golf watches main focus is golf with a bit of side tracking of other sports - they also now all track health etc. Then you have watches like the Garmin Venu 2 which offers equivalent to garmin’s basic golf tracking / Instinct 2 - between basic & mid-range / FR965 & FR955 about equivalent to garmin’s mid-range S42 series / Then you have the Fenix/Epix which offered pretty much everything their then top range S62 offered - but since superceded by S70 just released. But still offer most of this - just packed slightly differently and improved (no idea yet if these changes will roll out to Epix/Fenix).

S70 review (give you an idea of how it works on the watch) - https://youtu.be/DEcG0dakEz0
Garmin golf science (what they offer): https://www.garmin.com/en-GB/garmin-technology/golf-science/
And of course there is the golf app that goes with that (see right side bar links to the above link).

Suunto would have to invest a huge amount of development into being able to provide something like this - and then have to build out their name not only alongside Garmin but others that are as well recognized i.e. shotscope / skycaddie / bushnell/ Voicecaddie / golf buddie / tec tec tec / And then of course wear os / apple have apps like Hole 19 etc that you can use - and of course can always use phone (and apps like hole 19) and range finders…
