Post Ambit series, it seems that the Vertical, like the 9PP, requires constant calibration of the altitude and compass. Every 2 days or so the compass needs a figure-8 calibration and the altimeter has given me awkward varying ranges for the same location. How realistic is it to keep calibrating these in-built features every few days? Seems at odds with the competition.

On another note, the watch is not smart enough to remember the time when you switch the device off and on again. You NEED to sync the watch to get it to the right time.

Simple things done the Suunto way.

Out of curiosity, do you switch it off every day ?

@sartoric I don’t but I happen to do so yesterday to reset map downloads as they were showing blank. Restart fixed the maps but I had to resync watch to get the right time.

Think of it this way: do you want to sync (through the net) your laptop every time you restart only so it displays the right time?

I am very curious to see if by the next software update Suunto does indeed fix many of the issues that have come to light on this forum. That will probably give me a realistic view of Suunto’s commitment to their own software.

altcmd I also really hope that Suunto tries very hard to fix and make things right again. The user experience definitely seems to be very different and ranges from very good to unfortunately poor. I myself had 5 unwanted restarts of the clock in 2 months. In addition, a factory reset on the instructions of Suunto Support. Unfortunately, it seems that there are not only serious problems with the software, but also with the hardware. Dissolving backs of the sensor to name just one. The forum is full of shortcomings. And please don’t forget that this is a Suunto forum and all field testers will hardly admit a lack here! You’re supposed to send logs, but who of the participants really sends the data on to Suunto’s internal processing? Nobody can control it! And yes, there should be some positive things and improvements coming with the next update. To give an example, it should probably be a new recovery widget with a new algorithm… That would be really great! Hopefully no empty promises. Unfortunately, as a SUUNTO lover after more than 20 years, I have to say that some things have changed with each new product. And the Vertical started far too early with so many errors in the system. One gets the impression that Suunto just wanted to be faster than the competition, whether the software is running or not. We are currently the “testers” who actually assumed that we were holding a finished, intact product in our hands…

No, you are being SAD now,

It’s not true, do you think it’s just your problem?

              See? No serious issues.

@altcmd I do not calibrate altitude, I simply let FusedAlti work. My altitude may not be exactly correct but is close as my commute to work changes altitude by ~250m. I have been traveling the last two weeks and have noticed that going over mountain passes my altitude is near perfect or can be 100m off. After an exercise the altitude is correct. I do not worry about it enough and it is not an issue for me.

The compass will require calibration after being put on the charger, my production unit does not ask often for compass calibration. Calibration is likely required if the device is restarted or turned off into power saving mode.

@Brad_Olwin i do have to admit that my unit does require a lot of calibration. Even when not restarted or charged.
The strange thing is that calibration is very quick. Even when I don’t complete a full eight figure it tells me it is calibrated.

Not a big deal but the SV asks for calibration more often than the S9P I owned before.

@Brad_Olwin 20-30m variation at 250m altitude might be ok, but at near sea level, I am getting anywhere between -12 to +70 for similar locations. That’s a pretty wild variation given the base. And much of this calibration is not during activity - it’s from the normal watch mode and I don’t understand why the SV cannot get this right or about right? Again, my reference is Suunto’s competition and almost all of them have this going somewhat right but Suunto is in a league of its own making.

Small frustrations, but these are adding up.

I only run on flat ground, but I never get the similar altitude, the difference can up to 50%
