Proposal to change UI for Suunto Race

@paranoidrunner I have also used the discard function gazillion of times and tbh do not see the need to get rid of it. Imho the UI is perfectly fine as it is. Also it doesn’t bother me that the End option is where it is
FWIW after hundreds of activities I have never accidentally discarded one or pressed it by mistake. And as also mentioned you get a second screen to confirm that you do want to discard it
Often I’ll start an activity when checking screens if I load new data fields, so it’s useful (not to mention easier and faster) to be able to discard it there and then rather than have to end/save it and then have to go back and manually delete it
-
@MiniForklift I don’t know how many times I need to repeat this…
It is not about the presence of Discard - it’s about the problematic position in comparison to End, unarguably the more useful option.And your “use case” is simply just a work around for another poor point: designing screens is cumbersome and wild. Nothing I really like and enjoy. But I get your point. If I wanted to do this (maybe once …) I’d start the activities and afterwards just delete the useless recordings. I would not need discard at all and would not miss it.
I don’t really get all the fuzz here.
Having a crown you can easily turn till the virtual “end” of a list of options makes the very last and the very first options the “prime options” with the easiest reachable positions of all.
As a UX designer it is easy to deduct from this that clearly the most common options need to be placed exactly here: top and end. Not somewhere in the middle.And for your last point “the discard even has a confirm question”: I also found that rather strange: why is Discard the only one to have that question?!? End is also dangerous if you do not want to end but select the options.
All in all: Suunto as propagating very good usability should try harder to convince me they have UX designers working for them… ️

@Olaf-Gottschalk look.
Suunto is not there to follow each and every individuals proposals.
It is also not there to convince you of anything. It is there to meet the demands of as many possible customers. Your view on the world is not exclusive. Other’s have different views.
It makes sense to respect this.If you want your statement to reach Suunto exclusively, better write them an Email. By posting in this forum you start a discussion. I don’t understand the idea behind posting “This I what I think it should be. Please don’t comment otherwise, I want this to tell Suunto only”.
Apart from this, I am with you that “Discard” is not really a must-have, and that “End” could be at the end of the list.
-
@Olaf-Gottschalk you literately wrote in your initial post:
“B) I simply do not understand at all who wanted a Discard option in the first place. From support staff I learned it was recently added. But WHY??”
And then pople commented why they like the discard option, and you called it fuzz. This a forum where pople share their experience and discuss, what did you expect?

S9PP and SV share menu layouts as SR but they don’t have the crown, coming back to this “old” conversation on where END should be, just realised that maybe the design decision to put END higher on the list to avoid having those users needing an extra button press to get to the last option,especially for END option that’ll be used a lot more than DISCARD
In my opinion, having END at the bottom makes sense for RACE but it’s not the best UX for the other two ️ watches .
-
@herlas you’re right. My proposal is for Race only for that exact reason.
I expect Suunto to be able to ship different menu ordering on different models.
It’s not the customer who should have to suffer for the wrong choice of architecture. -

Are you actually serious? Different models should be given different menu layouts? Sorry but that is ridiculous
It’s not the customer who should have to suffer for the wrong choice of architecture.
That’s just your opinion. There are many people on here that are happy, and I for one have stuck with Suunto because of their architecture. If there’s something that’s glaringly wrong and a large percentage of people make it known it’s generally been rectified in a future update

I can say from a business standpoint this is exactly what YOU DON’T DO. You create a bunch of unnecessary complexity and dilute your resources. From a product management standpoint it becomes unwieldy. You want business simplification in all areas.
Putting as many of your products on a single focused architecture is what all businesses strive for.

I certainly don’t feel I am “suffering” with Suunto. I can’t get over just how good the Vertical is. An amazing bit of kit. Others may prefer Garmin or other brands, the choice we have are fantastic.
As a 57 year old who can still remember map, compass and handheld barometer and purchased the first Suunto Barometer watch (Vector?) I have to pinch myself at the tools we have available and just how good they are.
I’m certainly a long way from suffering. -
@Olaf-Gottschalk is actually looking for custom made smart+sport watch for himself
-
I think @Olaf-Gottschalk is not asking for a different watch OS or architecture for the Race – I believe he suggests that Suunto should differentiate between watches with and without crown. That is also what @herlas wrote above:

-
@Mauerwegler yes, a very good request which I don’t disagree with or to be fair really care about, either would be fine. It’s more I’m being told I am suffering if I do not have the exact opinion.
-
@Todd-Danielczyk do you know how the world of embedded devices works?
Of course developers differentiate during build time as to what target the build is for. This is not unnecessarily stuff, it is essential - it’s call build variants.
Without it a Race could not even have a digital crown while other models based on the same OS have not.

This is just a completely unnecessary comment. Just like this one. If you don’t want to contribute to the matter, why not just leave it?
-
@Olaf-Gottschalk bad or good it’s his own opinion… c’mon
-
What should we do now? Vote for mute someone?
-
@Olaf-Gottschalk buddy, I know how efficient companies run.
What you are asking for is a bespoke product from Suunto that is specific to your wants.
As far as I’m aware; they do not offer that. -
While I kind of like the options we have and where we have them, color coding them would be of benefit:
- resume: green
- options: blue (or something other than yellow or red)
- end: red
- discard: leave monochrome(?)
Or switch them around somewhat, but for those of us with aging eyes, the color coding goes a long way in ensuring we select what we intend to select.

I’d really like the ability to turn off vibration alert for notifications but still have it on for laps whilst in sport mode. Oh and be able to read the screen with just 2 data fields please
