This is now fixed for me following the latest update, the screen turns off as it should if I take the watch off.

Finally, the… mystery is solved, thanks to Suunto support agent on the web site. The display dims but never-never goes blanc because the heart rate sensor is always on! It would be very funny if it wasn’t disappointing.
So, I turned down my previous Garmin because of ridiculous battery life, and purchased Suunto because of (marketing) long battery life!
So, now I should be happy watching the display to drain battery, because heart rate sensor is activated… And I’m not talking about watching my heart rate in the display. Sensor is working in the background and the display stays always on (showing the time), for a reason which only Suunto engineering knows.
It would be very beneficial for Suunto engineering to check what competition is doing, and Suunto marketing to be very conscious on using battery life as a flag in their sales campaign.
Respecting customer should be an addiction, not another marketing buzzword. -
@gdimos I don’t understand. The S9PP has a MIP display. It is an always on display by virtue and consume power only when changing data displayed. So long battery life advertised is with the screen always on.
Have you an issue with the battery life ? -

Yes, MIP is consuming much less battery power than AMOLED. My objection is based on principle.
If you use a screen technology for saving battery, and you have the option to turn the screen off, as you do that when you don’t wear the watch (BTW that bug seems that resolved in the latest release, after 2,5 years having the product in the market), then why you keep it always on, just because the heart rate sensor is always on?
You can improve the power consumption but you don’t do it, although you could???Just to give an example from competition. During the sleeping hours, the screen goes blanc automatically, and it is activated only with double tap. In Suunto you have to do this manually but of course with a screen always-on, shining though dimmed, in the darkness of your sleeping room!!!
So, to answer your question, no I don’t have any battery issue so far, and I own my watch less than a month.
But I’m very concerned on how Suunto is engineering their watches, especially when such a product is being advertised on a specific feature (long battery life) and I realise that elementary steps are missed from preserving battery life.

@gdimos The S9PP has the best battery life on the market for a watch of this size. So saying Suunto doesn’t engineer their watches to have a great battery life is more than a stretch.
In your example, what I understand is you have the backlight on, even at night. It is not normal. Please check your settings !

I don’t know why Suunto support told you the screen doesn’t/shouldn’t turn off if you take the watch off.
My first 9PP, which I had for a year, turned the screen off. My replacement didn’t until the newest firmware release. It now does turn off after 2 minutes if I take off the watch and put in on a table. The user guide clearly states that is how it should work. My S9B and S9P do exactly the same.
I’m not sure it makes a meaningful difference to battery life unless you’re taking the watch off for days/weeks. But it should turn off the screen if working correctly. -
@MKPotts No, Suunto support didn’t tell me screen doesn’t turn off when watch is taken off from my hand. That was not the question and yes, watch is turning off when is out of hand.
Question was about screen not turning off when it is on hand, and of course when there is no action.
Just to be clear what Suunto support said and avoid creating any misunderstanding - they did their job perfect! -

@gdimos In the same Web page I linked, there is this note You can also set the backlight to be always on. Scroll to Backlight in Settings or in the Control panel, and toggle the switch to force backlight on.
Check this setting. -
@raceaddict You are correct, there is the below note in the user’s manual:
“NOTE: You can also set the backlight to be always on. Scroll to Backlight in Settings or in the Control panel, and toggle the switch to force backlight on.”
BUT there is not such an option in the watch menu as also Mff73 noted. I think that this note in the manual is ran out from a previous s/w version.
Anyway, just to give an end to this quest, I understand that the MIP display of 9PP never goes off as long as heart rate sensor is on. And this is what SUUNTO support has been responded in my case. Indeed, after I switched-off 24x7 sensor, watch screen went totally blanc after some minutes of wrist inactivity. Consequently, since technically there is capability of having the screen totally blanc (for preserving battery), I would expect this bug (connecting HR sensor activity with screen) to be eliminated in the next s/w version!

Sorry, I’ve misunderstood from the beginning what your problem/complaint is.
Understanding now that you want the screen to turn off completely when you’re wearing the watch - completely blank, not just the backlight off - my watch will do this but I have to keep my arm completely still. Even the slightest movement will turn the screen back on - from what I can tell, much less than is needed to activate the backlight in the “raise to wake” setting.
