What sport mode is missing from our watches in your opinion?

Ski ergo
I am curious, what would ski ergo mode possibly capture on the watch? I use ski ergo machine weekly doing a couple of high intensity sessions and record it as a part of my overall gym session. I don’t think the watch would be smart enough to capture any useful data from the arms motion, especially considering that the watch is only on one hand. Personally I wouldn’t bother using it probably because my ski ergo sessions are very short.
-
Do someone know the difference between these two sports mode:
- randonnée à ski
- ski de randonnée.
Both are available in SV2 (in addition to skimo, but this one make sense)
-
@sky-runner my ski ergo can be up to a hour. There so many other sports modes where you can wonder what is the point with it. So why not add ski ergo?
-
@Stefan-Kersting I suspect that when Suunto adds a new sport, they have to consider compatibility with the FIT standard because activities are exported to third party platforms. FIT SDK is owned by Garmin, but it is de facto standard for fitness data file format followed by every company. If Suunto adds a new sport that is not supported by FIT SDK, there is a risk of future incompatibility. I’ve just checked and I didn’t see SkiErg there. In other words, I suspect Suunto has to follow Garmin’s lead because Suunto is a much smaller company.
-
To expand on FIT SDK supported sport profiles, here is what I see in a recent version of SDK. These are sports that could theoretically be supported by Suunto of they care about third party compatibility, which they should.

There are a few sub-sports that can be combined with the above sports. For example “running” can be combined with “treadmill”, “trail”, etc. As another example, “fitness_equipment” could be combined with “stair_climbing” - that is something that was mentioned earlier in this thread. Here is the list:

I see indoor_skiing in the list. But perhaps that isn’t the same as SkiErg.

@sky-runner and to expand on this there are even sub types. So, an activity tracked as commute could be registered as commute sub type.

I’m missing native integration with my Concept2/PM5 rower so I can use the rowing activity profile and get precise metrics.

@JunkyXXL not enough usage of this sport mode

@JunkyXXL you would need position autodetection to estimate calories

to bring back to light, I miss :

@Dimitrios-Kanellopoulos Ice climbing - if not mentioned already

I’m currently using a Suunto Vertical1 and Race 2.
Personally, I miss the functionality of underwater swimming in a pool using apnea.
It’s similar to freediving, but for distance, not depth.
I supplement my activity with “snorkeling,” but it’s not the same.Depending on the equipment used, there are three main categories:
DYN (Dynamic with Monofin) – dynamic with a monofin.
DYNB (Dynamic with Bi-fins) – dynamic with double fins.
DNF (Dynamic No Fins) – dynamic without fins (swimming underwater using a stroke similar to the breaststroke). For comparison, holding your breath in place (e.g., while lying on the surface of the pool) is called Static Apnea (STA).
What do you think Dimi, can this be added?

-
@Artus-Diver The monofin version is there: Mermaiding.
How about using this also for other fin options? -
It’s not really sports modes that are missing from the Suunto Run but rather compatibility and functions:
-
Compatibility with the Runna app
-
The rower mode exists but it’s a shame that we can’t connect the PM5 of the Concept2 to the watch as with Coros.
-
No running and cycling tests to fill in heart areas, thresholds, FTP.
-
The function “Climb guidance”
-
-
@Egika
I’ve also used this “Mermaiding” mode, but it’s not what I expected.
I swim (and am learning) using the DYNB (Dynamic with Bi-fins) and DNF (Dynamic No Fins) techniques.
In the “Mermaiding” or “Snorkeling” disciplines, you press start, and it counts the time, depth, and number of dives… but there’s nothing else you can do (in my opinion, they’re the same sports with a different name).I think advanced freedivers could elaborate more.
I’m a beginner in this area, and for me, the “Mermaiding” or “Snorkeling” activities lack advanced/automatic management of surface intervals and heart rate for recovery.
Example:
- I free-swim for 50 meters (a distance, near the bottom of a swimming pool),
- the time of the “dive” is measured,
- depth,
- heart rate (minimum/maximum),
- the number of underwater strokes,
- the number of the next free-swim (if the dive is consecutive),
- maybe even saturation, but I’m not sure if this is a good indicator and wouldn’t it be better if it were measured during recovery?
- I stop after 50 meters and press the “LAP” button. From that moment on, recovery time should be measured/estimated based on the underwater time and the current heart rate.
It would be helpful if the swimmer/diver could set an alarm for:
- reaching the minimum heart rate (manually set),
- reaching the manually set surface interval time,
Maybe add the “Breathing” function available in Suunto Plus for more effective recovery?
After reaching the designated surface interval time or the set minimum heart rate, the next dive begins.
- The next step is to dive again as in step 1.

@Artus-Diver
Thank you for the explanation!
this sounds more like the function of an S+ app, than a sport mode to me.
