@Wenzudeg You can sync routes between the watch and the app while fully offline using the BT connection. Even better routes will sync during an exercise/activity and the new route can be selected in the watch and followed. I did this last weekend.
Drawing a route in the app requires a cellular connection now but I think offline maps in the app may be coming.

@Brad_Olwin Thanks. That’s a good workaround to the limited number of routes on watch.

@Brad_Olwin You can draw a route offline on the map, but only using the “Free drawing” option, i.e. just drawing straight lines by hand. A bit more time-consuming, but it can be used offline.

But currently you need a map of the given area in the application cache.

Where we can have this offline map in the suunto App!?

@GiPFELKiND The map has been in the app cache for some time. Turn on airplane mode on your phone and you’ll see that some areas you’ve recently used or saved routes in the Suunto app have maps of those areas in the app cache.

Of course, Suunto should have had fully usable offline maps long ago. I hope they implement this soon, as it’s a huge limitation of the entire Suunto platform.

I just tested a much more convenient method. The Maps. com app can generate an offline GPX file that can be opened in SuuntoApp and used on the watch—even offline. This is exactly what’s missing from SuuntoApp itself.

@maszop totally agree! Offline re-routing on downloaded maps is perhaps the greatest Achilles’s heel of the Suunto platform and, I think, the most important difference from Garmin’s system. As said in previous posts, this Achilles’s heel is further compounded by the limited number of routes one can offload onto the SV2.

I believe that watch processor and storage space are not the issues. And even if they are, why, at least, not use Suunto app on mobile device for these two jobs for eventual BT transfer to watch of gpx file (like you did with a third party app)? It’s not ideal since you have to have a mobile device on activity/exercise but you will have peace of mind that you are covered for any eventuality.

I do not what I am missing, but after creating the new route offline, as you described, ie using the “free drawing” option, the Suunto app wants me to save the newly created route before it can be followed/used, either in the app itself or be synced to the watch.
But when trying to save the route and pressing the button “Save”, the app shows a error message saying “No internet connection” and wont accept the “Save”, hence the new route created offline does not sync to the watch…and/or can not be used in the app for navigation.

                  What am I missing?

You are not missing anything. This is a big disadvantage of the iOS app at the moment.
