@Dimitrios-Kanellopoulos do you have notices about the impact in the battery when google pay is configured in the watch due to the full-time oHR sensor? AFAIK when you enable google pay, the watch use oHR to know if you quit the watch to ask for a PIN for security

other question: do you know if suunto is going to sell S7 charger alone?

@jorgefd78 about the charger no idea atm I can ask Monday.

        About the ohr question, no

This functionality is always on, pay configured or no.

There is even a setting “turn on dnd if watch is not on wrist”

The ohr module has IR that is a separate component Todo this. No ohr fires up.

For example I don’t use 24/7 HR tracking and this feature works.

thank you dimitrios for this detailed answer 🙂

did you experience some problem with wifi? sometime it doesn’t detect my wifi (router is about 2 meters from me) or it takes a long time to connect

@jorgefd78 if you noticed the watch has no wifi “on” only off and auto.

The watch will try not to use wifi if apps don’t need a lot of data.

So the watch decides cleverly what to use , Bluetooth or wifi.

For example if you open the Google play app, it will try to connect to WiFi.

This is a wear os / Google strategy to provide the best battery life.

@jorgefd78 I have been wearing my S7 for several months as a daily watch and banged the bezel as well as the screen into many things. I have posted photos here, there are no scratches on the watch face or the bezel. I think the watch is well constructed, I have had not issues with durability.

                First activity: cycling

Tried to mount the watch on the handle bar, like A3PS or Spartan Ultra. The OHR went crazy and was showing the maximum (red area in the outer circle).

I switched it back to the left arm. This was okay. 5 minutes of OHR at the minimum. The rest of the 2,5 hours were okay.

No autostop for cycling available, so I did it manually. Forgot it on one stop.

Automatically every 10 km the S7 stored a lap.

SA seems to calculate the full time, not the time in movement.

2,5 hours with GPS (no permanent display, because it is useless on the arm while cycling), notifications on, bluetooth on and often the activation of the display to check the distance and speed.

20% of the battery has been lost.

                That is very good.

The GPS is very accurate, no difference to A3PS or Spartan Ultra.

I think that the cycling mode should be changed or an autostop function be added. And a switch to deactivate OHR when mounted on the handle bar.

                Thanks for reading! 😊

@pilleus I am surprised there is no autostop for cycling. Due to our weather here and a very large snowstorm we had near Thanksgiving I have not had a chance to test this.

You mean HR zones? No, I set my max HR higher than it is to get my zones to match as close as possible. I hope this is something that changes.

@Dimitrios-Kanellopoulos for cycling it would be great to have the option autostop on the watch or the calcution of moved time without stops in SA. Strava calculated the cycling activity without pauses.

@Bulkan I suppose I will have quite a few things to say, but for now I have a small but important gift to the forum faring public. I put the new shiny Suunto 7 to the test at the gym… 70 minutes of various cross-training.

TLDR: I’m quite amazed by accuracy of the S7 wrist sensor (yes, I’m a poster boy for OHR in general, but still). It performed far better than I thought it would. Unfortunately, far better is still not good enough for where it matters. Rowing and spin bike seem to be generally OK as is stretching and bodyweight, especially if you don’t do anything too intensive. Dynamic stretching and mobility drills were problematic. And S7 totally dropped the ball on free weights. No miracles there, as expected. Given that it generally lags heart rate spikes and misses peaks, I wouldn’t do anything plyometric like box jumps with it either.

In the blue corner, aka on my right hand, is Suunto 9 connected to Polar H10, all latest firmware. This is a formidable and well established opponent and arguably a benchmark of accuracy. In the red corner is our challenger, Suunto 7, relying only on its wrist OHR smarts and some dark magic:

                                            Without further ado, fight!
                                            https://quantified-self.io/user/BwL3jSkSnUXc0PCudEMRoqT8MI93/event/gCenpbsAcwllpacr7yAm

Little notes. I took manual laps (see these at the end of comparison page):

                                            • Lap 1: Rowing (Concept 2 Model D rower, 28-30 strokes/min, max resistance): this was basically steady state rowing, nothing fancy
                                            • Lap 2: Spin bike (no name Chinese piece of iron, 48 lbs flywheel): I did three surges. One while seated, the other standing up pedaling, and the third one in aerodynamic position
                                            • Lap 3: A set of several bodyweight exercises, executed fast… Leg raises followed by push-ups followed by squats, plank, and more push-ups
                                            • Lap 4: Mobility drills: basically putting all my joints, from head to toe, one by one, through their range of motion
                                            • Lap 5: Dynamic stretching: bouncy, fast kicks, bends, and stuff
                                            • Lap 6: Static stretches: about 14-15 stretches performed for 1 min to the pain at level 6-7 (on 10 point scale), followed by 30 sec rest
                                            • Lap 7: Free weights – a few sets of bench dumbbells, biceps curls, and kettlebell swings. Do notice I waited until both watches settled on roughly the same heart rate before picking up weights
                                            • Lap 8: Cooldown walking around

Look at the numbers and draw your own conclusions.

I’ll probably use S7 for my recovery rowing and spin bikes sessions. Will need to test more for its suitability for the type of mobility/stretching work I do. The difference is material absolute numbers wise, but much less so once you look at cardio load and averages from session. It is definitely no go for kettlebell/plyometric HIIT, heavy bag, and weights.

Tomorrow I will do some running. Based on what I’ve seen so far I expect it to perform great OHR wise. Too bad it doesn’t have ad-hoc intervals or running power.
