@nikshot you could create POIs on the watch and use bearing navigation. Sure, not the same, but not useless non the less.

@дима-мельниченкоIn theory it is so, but in practice it is different, especially when we talk about heavily broken terrain with peaks and valleys, screes and precipices! In such terrains when using POIs
to cover 2-3 km can cost you days! I use POIS regularly when I’m looking for a place, but then I count on going back the same way and that’s when I need the track that my Suunto did. And one question - why is my Suunto doing tracks when I won’t be able to use it back ??? Don’t get me wrong, I’m a Suunto fan, this is my second watch from the brand, but in this 9 series this is a serious omission that needs to be corrected !!! It is not serious for the watch to be dependent on a phone …

          the answer is simple:
it is not a descision not to do this, as everyone agrees, this is a useful function.
Starting with the Spartan line Suunto has undergone a massive change with their whole ecosystem.
That means, all feature wishes needs to be prioritized - and this feature (use recrding as route in watch) has been lower on the list than other functions.

t6, S6, Elementum Terra, Ambit 3 Sapphire, Spartan Ultra Copper, Traverse Alpha, S7 Graphite LE, S9B Ambassador, S9P Granite Blue Titanium, S9PP Titanium Sand, Vertical All Black, Race Titanium Charcoal,
Race S All Black - TI Canary - Titanium Courtney

But you will, you just need to sync the S9 with your phone.

I agree it’s not ideal, but it’s what we have.

I think that if I were worried about finding my way back through challenging terrain I would wear my Traverse on my other wrist and record on that as well.

              @mff73Hello again,
This weekend I tried what we talked about.
Here’s what happens when your phone is out of range:
The information really enters via Bluetooth in the phone, but it gives me no connection to the Internet and offline, the buttons for recording and transferring the route are missing - I am attaching photos:

              Image1.jpg
              Image2.jpg

and here the route does not exist at all:

              Image3.jpg

now I am attaching photos after internet connection:

              Image4.jpg
              Image5.jpg Image6.jpg Image7.jpg

So, the answer to the question is that with a phone without internet it is not possible to use routes that are currently created by the watch … which makes Suunto completely dependent on the phone, and hence makes many accents that the new Suunto is famous for meaningless, like long battery life - what about the phone battery if with short life ??? And the main accent of Suunto is that it is GPS navigation 🙂 which you can’t use without a phone, etc …

i have tried it before answering you 😉
have you put your phone on airplane mode to do this test ? if yes, you need to enable bluetooth for sure 😉
no internet doesn’t mean no wireless communication to watch 🙂

the phone doesn’t need to be connected to internet but the watch need to be connected (linked) to the phone.

@nikshotAs I wrote above, the watch has a connection to the phone, it even transmits the information, but until then … you need the Internet for the reverse!

Is the toggle active (clickable) ?
Because when you create the route, the toggle is always “off”.

If the watch is connected there no reason why the route cannot be exported/saved … except a bug of course 😁

On Android, when watch is well connected, the watch icon is ticked

Your screenshots show a dash. Maybe iOS really needs Internet to connect to watch. Which for sure will be very bad for you 😔

@mff73It strikes me that when I go online, only then the phone updates the card and the buttons for transferring back to the clock appear - it is visible from the photos I have shown.

maybe wait for some iOS experts to confirm if internet is mandatory to connect to watch and help.

@nikshot I would strongly recommend that you get on the phone to Suunto or contact them by Chat. They’re quick to respond and should be able to help.

@mff73 I think is one of the differences between Android and iOS version of Suunto app. I have iOS and just like @nikshot I don’t have the option the save a route from an activity, when phone has no internet connectivity.

@nikshot I just checked this with no internet connection I can click the button @sartoric had in the image and upload to the watch. Moreover, I can import a GPX file from a list on the phone and import into SA and import into the watch, with no cellular and no wifi. You cannot draw a route without internet.

Are you on the beta for iOS?

@brad_olwin You’re right on that score but the OP’s aim was to turn a just-generated activity track on the watch into a useable route without internet access. To get the same result as the Logbook entry -> navigable Route on the Ambits (watch-only).

On my iOS (latest Beta), and @andrasveres’, that won’t work. In my case, even with a happy BT connection to a Spartan, there are no Three Dots (for more functions) in the activity record … without internet. There’s no share icon, either: pretty much as @nikshot illustrated.

We can’t export a GPX in iOS without a data connection because the SuuntoFormatActivity -> GPX requires more oomph than many phones have, apparently. Perhaps the same thing applies to extracting a SuuntoFormatRoute from a SuuntoFormatActivity and xferring the result to the watch under iOS?

@fenr1r That is a very specific case. There is find back to retrace the route on the watch, which should suffice. and if @nikshot knows the route ahead of time or alternates they can be loaded and used. I see this as less of an issue.

@brad_olwinFor me this is a very serious drawback and again I say it makes no sense the whole concept of a watch whose main function is to be GPS navigation !!! Imagine three days moving in the high mountains in an absolutely unknown and wild place, without marked trails, without internet connection. Every day you make a track in the clock with the idea to go back the same way! On the fourth day you go back, but you don’t have internet, electricity in the phone, the phone broke, you lost your phone, the rain got it wet and it blocked … And what if I have a watch (depending on the phone in question) with GPS navigation, with a battery of up to 170 hours, a watch that is so strong and protected that it will work even after an atomic bomb ??? What exactly will it do for me in this situation - maybe to measure my heart rate (if I could and blood pressure: D) to find out how angry I am with the ridiculous situation …
