Suunto AI Coach discussion
-
@LGoSo official video is above and confirms Suunto doesn’t use your data to train AI models used in Suunto AI coach.
-
Any chances Suunto reconsiders the rollout plan?

-
@pavel.samokha So Joaquin is wrong. Perhaps someone at Suunto should tell him as he is part of Suunto team according to his youtube summary.
-
@LGoSo hi can you explain me the problem? I can explain you

-
@LGoSo I saw

Perhaps something was lost in translation in the video, or my explanation wasn’t clear enough.

What I meant is that Suunto has more than 20 years of experience developing sports algorithms, and that we have brought those algorithms and that expertise into Suunto AI. I was not referring to training the AI on Suunto users’ personal data.
I also explained that the AI learns about each individual user through their own chat to personalise the experience, but that this personal learning is not shared with other users.
My reference to “more than 20 years” was specifically about Suunto’s sports algorithms and expertise, not users’ data.
Also, this is explicitly stated on the Suunto AI Coach screen every time you open it: “Your data is not used to train AI models.” You can see this in the screenshot below. I think the wording is quite clear.

-
Hard to understand something else than that the data is directly used to feed the AI model.
But, whatever, as you said, you could have badly expressed what Suunto is doing with our data.
In addition, but this is more technical, if you are not using the data directly but the “information” extracted from the data, you are not really using an AI as most of the people understand it now (data driven AI) but something closer to an expert system (rule based AI) or something hybrid. Is it the case? Just out of curiosity. -
@LGoSo thanks for quoting the exact wording. I can see why you interpreted it that way, and I’m sorry I wasn’t clearer. That wasn’t what I intended to say. I was referring to Suunto’s accumulated sports expertise and algorithms, rather than users’ personal data being used to train the AI.
The personalization I mentioned concerns each user’s own experience, not sharing their data with other users. As stated in Suunto AI Coach, your data is not used to train AI models.
Regarding your technical question, I honestly don’t know enough about the underlying architecture to give you an accurate explanation. I’d rather leave that part to the technical team than speculate and create further confusion. Thanks for giving me the opportunity to clarify.

Garmin MCP is not official, yet some users are already testing it in beta. And yes, third parties are involved, and they provide considerably more. I expect Suunto to extend the MCP until the official launch, though they seem eager to announce unfinished products.
-
@greenfish29 I guess they will keep the free MCP read-only, it won’t allow us to “send workouts” from an AI client.
-
@danutz ah, thats why. I watched the video and I think the Write-Access features are interesting: Route planning and creation of structerrd trainings. The analyzing things not so much. But if it wouldn’t cost more than a TrainingPeaks account it could be a reason to switch. If the created plans are better then MyPlan…
What I don’t get is how this could be not available to older watches. Its just a functionality of the App
-
@VoiGAS it of course will work with current watches.
You are correct, that it is an app thing.
Just now for the start it comes free for Race3s customers, before being rolled out to everyone later. -
@Egika Good to hear! There is a comparison table on the (german) Suunto website saying otherwise, but I also didn’t think so

“Unterstützt keinen KI Coach” means “Doesn’t support AI Coach”
-
@VoiGAS yes, that’s wrong, I have tested the AI Coach with all watches in the current lineup of Suunto, it is fully on the app. Of course because the service is currently limited to Race 3S owners, it is kinda tied to the watch

But I believe it serves the purpose of not flooding the service from day 1, making it unstable or too expensive. It will grow naturally with the feedback of R3S users, and be open to everyone in 2027.
-
@isazi I don’t want to come across as nerdy or condescending, but wouldn’t the feedback from the existing users be generally more useful, compared to the people who are new to the platform?
-
@oleksandr well, there will be people buying a Race 3S that are already Suunto users, and there are also other ways this is being tested. I have used if for few months, and so have others.
-
@isazi is there any way to get the access sooner? I like the 3s, but can’t imagine switching to it from Race 2. That’s the most comfortable watch with the large screen I ever owned, and the watches with the smaller screens now look tiny in comparison
-
On the discussion topic: I’m really curious how this AI feature will work out for Suunto. I’m a software engineer, and I know for sure that building this kind of AI agents takes a lot of time and resources. Unless it offers something mind-blowing, people won’t pay for it. They already pay for Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini and so on, which also help them with their daily life and work. A free MCP with read and write access would definitely have been the right move for Suunto, especially since Coros already has one and other third parties allow this too. Someone could argue that using it would be much easier than setting up an MCP. But non-technical people are getting better at using AI tools, and AI companies are really pushing for this.
-
@danutz
I agree that the write capability would be the important new feature. Personally I use a combination of Claude and intervals.icu for analysis and training suggestions. I honestly do not see what Suunto could add in the form of analysis functionality that would compel me to pay for another service. But I think that updates to the Suunto OS would be needed to support uploading structured workouts. Currently structured workouts are packaged in Suunto Guides that contain the structure, and the guides do nto have configurable data screens.
-
After i activated my R3s and play a little bit with Suunto AI I’m pairing my Run 2 and my V2 and Suunto AI work again.
-
@Mi_chael AI coach is not supposed to be linked to watches ; but activation for now is linked to SRs3 purchase.
