So, my problem with Suunto fitness - not fitness watches consists of following. I first bought S3F, I liked fitness stuff but I really missed GPS and outdoor stuff. Then I bought S9B which is awesome, but it lacked fitness stuff. Not to mention that at the time Suunto app was almost unusable, but I wanted to stay with Suunto as a brand. I’m not a ultra runner, just a regular person who likes outdoors, mountains, trail running, but also gym, tracking my fitness progress, etc. I love suunto for their quality and at the time that I bought S9 I didn’t have other future proof option. Now they release S5, which has both outdoor and fitness features. Watch which is probably more usable to a person who is not a pro. S9 just doesn’t look that better for a regular person than S5. It is still a better build and materials, but S5 looks like a better deal, to me at least. S9 supports all of the fitness and outdoor things, and as a flagship that costs a lot of money should have them. Just give us options to turn features that we don’t need on or off.

As you have said in another post, go an buy a Garmin.
If you do not understand that the comparison wasn’t in the car that was in the features is not my problem or you could say that you do not understand it and will try to make it simpler. I’ve tried to have a constructive discussion.
BTW forget about me, don’t bother to answer me I won’t answer you anymore.

I’d say no baro, if you compare both 5 (first column) and 9 (second) :

              correct.
              No baro.
If it was Baro that would be in the name. Plus you would see some openings in the housing.

@Egika I compared products on Suunto UK website, old Suunto Spartan Trainer and new Suunto 5. Main differences in Altimeter section are: Combined GPS and barometric altitude (FusedAlti™) and Altitude in daily mode. It could be a mistake though…

Could it be based on accelerometer data, as in the FusedTrack ?

It looks like no baro to me too.

Have you noticed that they stated it’s going to be compatible with movescount and that there is:

                    • Waypoint and visual route navigation
                    • Point of Interest (POI) navigation

Isn’t this strange? They are listing movescount, waypoints and POIs when they are effectively going to ditch those features in very near future.

Otherwise, it looks pretty decent. If it only had barometer it could replace Ambit3 Peak. But unfortunately without a movescount or some new web platform, even with baro, it wouldn’t appeal to me. It would be too inconvenient to use for hiking if I had to create and load routes using my phone. I don’t want to use third party tools for basic watch features. Third party tools may exist now, but there is no guarantee they will work reliably and they will be compatible with the watch at all. Now they work, tomorrow they don’t. They have no obligation to me in any sense.

For me it’s not strange with the connection to movescount, the last email from suunto described:

We have heard from many of you that the Movescount web service is an important part of your Suunto experience.  We continue to review movescount.com and its most important and utilized functionalities.

By the way, does anybody know what’s the use of the small round metal dot on the back of that watch, which is already on the trainer as well (but on no other model as far as I can see) ?

True, but still, they say that Suunto app is the future of their services. It makes sense that older watches depend on movescount, but this is entirely new product and they are still advertising it with platform that they are not going to develop anymore (and which is still on their kill list).

Oh well, all this uncertainty with Suunto these days… It’s beyond me how poor PR job they are doing. Imagine a new customer buying this watch and expecting to use all the features advertised, only to discover that he/she has to use two different apps for it and be careful to force close one before starting the other etc. Nightmare…
