@dimitrios-kanellopoulos Hi there, I know this thread is quite old, but I recently bought the Suunto Ambit 3 All Black (I guess about 3 weeks ago). Everything worked quite okay since then, the connection to the Suunto App was up and running in a couple of minutes, just this one thing makes me struggle since then:
When I go for a walk, hiking or running I always ran into the following issue
Steps to reproduce:
- connection to Suunto App okay, GPS on smartphone (Android, Motorola) on
- watch up and training started
- Suunto App says something like “the watch is using the phone’s gps”
- After the workout the following problems show up
The problems:
- the measured distance is wrong
- I do not see any GPS / map data but the same as @Chrys posted in June 18: https://forum.suunto.com/assets/uploads/files/1624017065561-suunto.jpg just a picture…
System details:
Suunto 3, 2.18.18
Suunto App Version 4.49.1, all permissions and notifications granted
Android 9Are there any other known solutions than the ones mentioned in this thread? As far as I understood the problem was the Suunto App / operating system on smartphones in most cases, but can someone give me a hint on how to verify the watch functionality?
Help appreciated,
kind regardsBenjamin

@benjamin-ulmer
I assume you don’t have an Ambit 3, but a Suunto 3?
Do you have all background activities in the phone allowed, too?
GPS needs to update in SA very frequently during your activity.
I know e.g. that Huawei phones have a very restrictive power saving setting by default. Once the phones screen turns off, some functions are limited, too. -
@benjamin-ulmer Sorry I cannot help, this is working with an iPhone, perhaps there are settings that prevent the phone from sharing GPS data? Or, perhaps the phone is shutting down GPS collection?
-
@isazi I am sorry, but your post reply shows up as deleted, but thanks anyway.
@freeheeler That’s completely true. I missed the Ambit part. Sorry for the confusion. I thought of something like this, but could not see anything indicating a problem.
@brad_olwin I will dive into this in detail in the next days. Thanks for your suggestion.
Some general facts about my actions take so far:
I did not only reinstall the Suunto App but also
- turned on all notifications from smartphone to watch in the Suunto App watch settings section
- in Android settings on my smartphone
- enabled all notifications from Suunto App
- gave all permissions for the Suunto App
- completely disabled the energy saving mode
- turned of the smart battery mode
Is there any options I missed to check out and missed to find in the previous posts on this topic here?
Kind regards.

Hello,
I ran through some initial steps I had take before once again today:
- uninstall and install the Suunto App
- Soft reset the watch
- Hard reset the watch
Nothing changed. I tried this a already a couple of days ago, but it did not solve my problems back then as well.
In addition I made some checks to my phone’s GPS, because I asked myself if there were some general issues with it, that i.e. Google Maps does not show because of it’s integration into Android OS. I checked the GPS tracking using Openstreetmap just to make sure, that a complete Google independent software works and it located my smartphone via GPS at any time.
I am going to get in touch with the Suunto support team. Probably they come up with some new solutions. If so, I will share them here.
Kind regards

I just wanted to give you an update. Unfortunately I could not solve the problem. The official Suunto support continues answering with very lame standard solutions, which is not really helpful at all.
I am going to use my watch for sports I do not required GPS for and daily tracking of sleep, …
When it comes to GPS I’ll stick with my old Ambit as it actually works perfectly okay.Nevertheless, thanks for your great information here in the forum.
Keep on the good spirit.Kind regards,

@benjamin-ulmer
Did you eventually try this?
https://forum.suunto.com/topic/6001/suunto-fitness-3-not-recording-gps-data/5You could also try with another phone (android or iOS), ot last chance, get another S3 and test (from someone else or buy on to send it back after tests (no nice but…)).
Good luck.

Yes I did (https://forum.suunto.com/topic/6001/suunto-fitness-3-not-recording-gps-data/5), but it did not solve my problem.
I have not tried another phone yet, but I think I’ll give it a try, just to make sure (although I am pretty sure it will because most of the issues with S3 and smartphones seem to be caused by smartphone rather than S3 - at least that’s what I found when searching the web)
Thanks anyway.

The same error:
https://forum.suunto.com/topic/7113/s3f-no-speed-during-cycling -
@benjamin-ulmer same problem here
as you can see about 13km but only few meters tracked by gps
all app’s permissions are set correctly
-
Ok,another running today and now I have zero gps data !
I checked before start the excercise to see the GPS arrow on my watch.
The only difference with my last excercise is the new version of the android app (4.51.5)
So for me the Gps problem is due to the android appPlease fix it

@guillaume-faure
I don’t think that Suunto can fix the battery saving behavior of any phones.
I saw the same thing on my daughter’s watch (or let’s better say Huawei phone), but since she doesn’t want to track gps data, I did not further dig into it. -
@freeheeler i think i found a hidden setting in my Redmi Note 9…
will try to see if it’s working -

@guillaume-faure
Last gasp attempt is open the suunto app - press button/screen swipe (whatever you have to do) to get open app list/cards. Long press on the suunto card and you should get an option to lock it. Press lock - it has now locked it in background memory and shouldn’t close the app. If it is doing this you need to check the profiles options that the Redmi has - as from what I can remember it has certain profiles that can lock down pretty much everything (irrespective of normal settings). -
@freeheeler it worked!
