Why don’t they list Running power from wrist in the the specs and features of the watch if indeed that is a key feature being added? They also don’t list the snorkeling depth stuff very well in the specs. Is the navigation still the same as S9B and S9P? Have they updated the in-activity line graph screens to have an entire activity based x axis or is it still the sad last 5 mins time x axis we had on rest of S line? Fingers crossed they were able to make that change…

I am not sure. In reality if you would get the S9PP today you would not have snorkeling and running power because they are coming with the October firmware update (that new buyers will have already available when their watches arrive from the 25th).

It is similar, the only noticeable change is that you get arrows instead of text for turn-by-turn navigation (as often requested here). But navigation updates are on the drawing board, especially considering that the graphics capabilities of the S9PP are much higher than previous models.

@isazi uff I didnt know testing FW changes several times per week. 😄 21 days for daily use is big. I was interested with different sport activities and daily use how much battery time you achieved.

@isazi better navigation might prompt me to consider s9pp or its successor at some point in the future (probably a year or two)!
My experience of S9 is constantly turning wrong on forks. Which becomes even more comical since my friends start to tell me that my behaviour is usually turn wrong a couple of time then look at the map on my phone.

@isazi that is helpful thanks. do you know if they have increased the storage of the unit as compared to past units? Seems like if there is talk of live segments and other integrations…seems like the new app store is leaning into that quite a bit, that more storage might be helpful there. also like you said if the new processor unlocks better mapping capabilities that also would require a good amount of cached storage for map data…

@northeast_trekker I think storage and memory are increased, don’t have any specs available though. Live Strava segments are coming (now that reviewers mentioned them I can also talk about it) for previous (supported) models too. Next firmware update will make them work 🙂

@isazi that is cool news. thanks for answering. nice to see an app store is starting some nice feature adds that used to be beyond Suunto’s reach. will reap rewards for them and their user base.

@northeast_trekker I know that it looks like Suunto was silent for a while, but the S+ project (apps and guides) is a pretty big challenge, in the past 12 months they developed all the backend, improved the firmware under the hood, developed the APIs and programming tools necessary for third-parties to develop apps and guides, etc.

The new S+ apps will be published directly to the app store without the need to have a firmware update, and many things are already available, like Stryd and smartglasses support, swimrun and surfing apps, fitness tests, etc.

@isazi If you can answer this: will there be some grade of testing/approwing of apps from the side of suunto? So that users can rest assured the 3d party apps wont brick their watches or drain to much battery, etc.

@DMytro I myself tested the development tools and made few apps, so from my knowledge of how they work I believe they cannot brick a watch (but they may make it crash, thus loosing an activity, as some users experienced yesterday enabling new apps on unsupported firmware), but they increase processing needs so some battery penalty is to expect.
Suunto will control the store though, so all apps from third-parties will go to Suunto one way or another to be published, so there will be some kind of check.

@isazi ok, great to hear that, thanks! Depending on how much apps there’ll be in total, a sort of rating/commenting system may be useful, to help both users and developers. Of course, what we see today is just the first beta.

@isazi oh and btw, will there be some sort of tool available for users? I might want to develop a bouldering app, since suunto still doesn’t let one count number of routes climbed (and maybe even to differentiate the grades).

@DMytro as of today, I think there is no plan to open the development to single users (Suunto does not have the resources for this). On the bright side, the bouldering app is the example in the S+ apps documentation, so it may eventually come.

Not interesting enough to upgrade from the S9P to the S9PP. I’ll wait for the next one with map guidance and a slightly larger interior screen, hopefully soon…
