Suunto Vertical is here

Another feedback after a 21km trail running this morning (so my wife could try her new S9pp ! )
First try following a prepared route with the Vertical : tracking with maps is sooooo good and easy ! I was one of those saying that « maps are not necessarily needed as Suunto route tracking is really very good »…but now must admit that it improves so much the experience !! Smoothness of maps is just awesome, gps precision is just incredible, screen so readable (backlight at minimum)…I’m just so happy !
Forgot to put my hr chest strap on…guess it was written that I had to try ohr at least once…so…not much more convinced than before on me (even if seems better than with my S9b). I’ll keep using chest strap for activities and ohr for day and sleep tracking where it performs quite well on me.
With OHR and 90% to time on the maps screen, battery consumption was about 4-5% for 2h10 of activity.
Solar charging : I guess I need to experience more. Yesterday with less sun it brought me from 94 to 99%. This morning it stays at 92 even if one hour of bright sun.
Perhaps watch needs a complete discharging circle ?…but I don’t know when I’ll be able to achieve that while the autonomy drains soooo slowly !!!
Happy user !!! -
@v-sacre i wish for days when OHR will work perfectly 95% of time.
-
@Dimitrios-Kanellopoulos how does this work? Does it require both watch and app or app only? And, will this be coming to older watches?

There is a lot of individual variablility for OHR. For me, I can do everything but fast intervals with S9PP and OHR is excellent, matches the belt.
The Vertical for me is not as good but I have seen others where it is perfect. Same with my wife on Apple Watch, it is poor for her. Depends on wrist size, watch size, skin color (tattoos) and bone structure likely. -
@DMytro needs both
-
@renton82 if you swim without stopping with the watch underwater for a while, yes. If you stop, there are issues currently, that Suunto is trying to fix with a hotfix release in the coming weeks.
-
@Dimitrios-Kanellopoulos wondering if the audio feedback on SV reused some of the old audio feedback feature present since ages in Sportstracker app, which SA inherented.
Only HR zone change is new there I think. Currently in SA we can even select what metrics we want to hear from a defined set available. This is when tracking only with SA

@NickK Well, no ‘pre-order’ Suunto Vertical coming. Maybe a sign I should just keep my 9PP for now. Amazon early in the week said yes, will be delivered. Today they say ‘I am sorry as item is not available so we are unable to take any action you can cancel the order.’
Advice: order directly from Suunto, or in hand from a retailer! Dont order from Amazon.
Glad for everyone who received one! Enjoy.
Ill go back to the S9PP forums and wait for the updates.

@mikekoski490 Sorry to hear that. Mine is on the truck to be delivered later today (supposedly). I’ll believe it when I have it.
Does REI have presence in Canada? They had stock as of yesterday, available for delivery within a week.

We have an MEC but they aren’t carrying it yet (let’s not get started on the downfall of MEC…)
Can likely cross the border to get to the REI

Hi,
Thanks for the advice! MEC is not so great anymore for sure. REI would take a few hours to get to the closest one in Washington State, but if anything goes wrong with the device it’s a PITA to return or exchange.
I’ll stick with the 9PP for now, and see what the update holds.

Yeah I was going to say this earlier but didn’t want to hijack the SV thread with 9PP praise. 9PP is
still a greata fantastic watch. Now that a few days have gone by and my FOMO has fizzled out, I’m happy to stick with it for a lot longer until maybe a smaller size SV comes out in a year+ -
@mikekoski490 Suunto Canada has steel all in stock and titanium/solar within two weeks. Never had to deal with any Suunto returns

I said exactly the same couple of months ago, even in surveys and made suggestions how to improve navigation with little effort… now that we have maps I honestly can’t imagine how I could have lived without them all these years
-
@mikekoski490
honestly sorry to hear about your bad luck!!
maybe your desired model is still available at Suunto directly and you can order it? what I know from several shops is that you can’t cancel an order, but you can always send it back, sometimes even free of charge… -
@freeheeler we had a hike today and now I think exactly the same. Routing was good in the past but has become even better with the maps feature.
-
Core Temp S+ not compatible with SV. Must be a mistake?
-
@lexterm77 I’ll report it and check

I’m going to say something wildly unpopular
I think it’s about time for Suunto to reach out to past customers, ask what platform they moved to and what would it take to bring them back, really
Maybe next time things like structured workouts, Training Peaks workout import, training load reports and analysis, and yes, offline maps would take priority over a snorkeling mode and half baked social aspects of the Suunto app?
And yes, I’m keenly aware Suunto has a lot of telemetry data of features used, market research, and what not. And that some things, like Google’s stab in the back and pivot to Samsung and WearOS 3 effectively undercutting S7 couldn’t have been predicted, but still…
I can’t help but wonder how would Vertical look like in the world with different set of priorities? Would we have multiple sensors per type? Emoji in text messages and no ghost notifications? Multiple S+ apps and a guide combined? Custom reminders? Track mode? Estimate of fuel sources used similar to Polar’s FuelWise? Perhaps, a morning recovery summary similar to Garmin’s Training Readiness? A web based front end like COROS Training Hub? Watch ECG-based morning HRV measurement and tracking?

@NickK I used guide + app yesterday without issues
