Strava Live Segments
-
Suunto Vertical is the first Suunto watch to support Strava Live Segments feature yet there is literally zero information about that anywhere - neither on suunto.com nor in any review that I could see.
For me, live segments are the most interesting as a way to do FKT attempts or virtual competitions with other local trail runners. Many FKTs in my area have matching Strava segments. All climbs to local peaks also have Strava segments, as well as many descents. The local community has been creating many longer segments that may take anywhere from one hour to multiple hours to finish, and those are the most rewarding to try to run and compete with others on.
Has anyone tried this feature? Are there any screenshots that can be shared in this thread? How reliably does Strava Live Segment tracking work on Suunto Vertical, especially when running on trails? I am really curious about that. When tracking a segment does it also show it on the map? Also, does live segment tracking work at the same time when following a navigation route.
Garmin has supported live segments for a long time, but Garmin’s implementation is somewhat disappointing in my experience because of how poorly it works on trails, especially when running on mountain trails with switchbacks.

Great questions mate I’m also very interested in this as I regularly go for fkt in my area as well. The main issue with Garmin from what I could tell is that with live segments you had no flexibility to change the screens ie you couldn’t have your heart rate showing at same time as strava live which for me and prolly others is not good as I like to see my hr when going for a fkt. I’m not sure if this restriction was coming from Garmin side or strava.

@sky-runner Suunto implementation is based on Guides, so it can be used together with navigation. I tested it on the S9PP, never on Vertical, and it worked fine in my area, no trails though. Didn’t test on Vertical because I don’t have a premium account at the moment. DCRainmaker shared sime screenshots on his YouTube review.

Maybe I am wrong but Strava Live segment are not yet available for Suunto Vertical and it has never worked properly with S9PP…

@sky-runner I check it today on bike. it works. when you are approaching nearest stared segment on Strava, you see distance to the start. at the beginning you see alert with PR time and KOM time. during segment there are 3 data fields: time in seconds/minutes ahead/behind; distance to the finish and speed. when finish, there is recap. what was measured by watch is the same as on strava.

@v-sacre I have it on Vertical… it is in Suunto Guides
-
@nseslija indeed it seems to be back 🤩
-
Is it watch specific? I cannot find it in Suunto Guides with S9B.
-
@MdzOtt Only Vertical at this moment
-
@dombo Thanks! What about the elapsed time? I guess for running segments it would show pace in place of speed.
What I am really interested in is how reliable the algorithm is. Garmin’s algorithm has a clear fault which makes the watch drop off a segment in a sharp turn even though the accuracy of Fenix 7 is excellent. In fact it drops not in the turn but when approaching a turn, shortly before it.
If there are any trail runners who use Strava segments, would be really interesting to hear their experience.
Strava segments and better map readability might be enough for me to push me from Garmin Fenix 7 to Suunto Vertical. If only it also had two additional features - Climb Pro and Up Ahead - then I’d buy it immediately!

@sky-runner The best you can do do is maybe order the watch and return it if segments don’t work the way you want it.
-
@MdzOtt S9B needs a firmware update first.

Anybody know how to get back strava live segment guides within the Suunto App, once it has been deleted before ? I don’t see it anymore in the guide list…
-
I don’t have Strava segments in the SA (iOS 2.24.2) for my Suunto Vertical (FW 2.25.48)
-
@trailcafe I had only cycling segments but I just delete it (it was an option). Now I don’t see cycling segments neither running segments…
-
@v-sacre first, try to add a new segment in Strava, and then go to Suunto App and refresh the guides. If this does not work, another trick that used to work in the past (cannot tell you if still works) was to go to Strava, delete all segments, go to Suunto App, refresh guides, go back to Strava, add segments, back to Suunto App, refresh again.
-
@isazi thanks for the explanation.
I have deleted everything and back on after. It worked partially for cycling segment. But nothing for running segments… -
@v-sacre give it some more time, and the refreshing the guides list in the app before deleting the segments, after deleting them, and then again after adding them back is important.

@isazi I unstarred all my segments, refreshed S+ apps forth and back, starred segments, refreshed S+ apps again but no Strava Segements S+ app appears in the Suunto App S+ App section
