No-Map-Problem
-
Yes, it’s some part of the map for sure. But it might as well be no map. It did work when I set up the watch for the first time. All I can do now is wait.
-
Black grid problem during Monday’s MCC race. Wanting to avoid a crash during the race, I stayed on the screen with the elevation. Otherwise, the waypoints worked fine.
-
After about 2 months no issues, had the no map problem on a local trail run today. After the run, I synced with the app and checked again after syncing but still no map - just the black grid (worked fine yesterday though). For this time and the previous time, my solution has been:
- Power off/power on
- Sync with app
- Maps show again right away
I did this before my big backpacking trip just in case, and hit ‘Map’ before the hike just to make sure the map was rendering no problem, and it was fine the entire trip.
Just my experience, but it seems like some kind of memory issue - like wherever the maps are being stored is competing with other things like workouts etc and cant load, so need to clear out the storage or cache occasionally.

So, it’s just the map that I had originally downloaded on my SV before I performed a factory reset that doesn’t display correctly anymore. Support hasn’t gotten back to me yet and I don’t know if the agent really escalated my issue to engineering or not. There hasn’t been any e-mail confirmation. It’s so frustrating. I really want to like this watch, but it’s getting harder every day.

Dumb question forthcoming…you’ve deleted and redownloaded the problem map? Results in the same behavior?
-
@stromdiddily Yes and even after several factory resets.
-
Just for the record since I believe Suunto is aware of this issue.
Today I suffered from the no-map issue since a long time. Just started an activity and selected the map. All black tiles.
I discarded the activity, rebooted the watch and started a new activity. The map is working again. -
Not helping, but fortunately I read this thread just before selling my fenix 6X and buying a Vertical. Since map is one of the main primary function I use in French Mountains for trail trainng or to discover new places to run around, will keep the 6X and wisely wait.
-
I also had the no-map issue 3 or 4 times since may.
The soft reset never worked, but the “stop the watch”, and “restart” always solved.
Did you tried ? -
@Matteiva
I’ve never had issues either and I know of so many users who don’t have maps issue nor crashes.
of course you can be unlucky but it’s the same risk with buying a laptop, phone, bike, car… -
@Ilya-Sul
Still radio silence from Suunto Support, even after emailing them again. I can’t even sell the watch now, since the problem might be with the watch itself or the some remaining map data fragments that cannot be wiped from the watch’s internal storage (the factory reset doesn’t reset the fw version, so it’s no completely clean slate).

did you pay your watch with a cashback service?

I don’t understand : if your watch needs to be replaced the support should already have asked you to send the watch.
I have dealed a couple a times the past years with them and they always were very reactives (A3P baro sensor replacement twice).
Perhaps depend on the country… -
@Tieutieu I don’t know IF it has to be replaced, because support just told me they’d pass on the info. That’s it.
I emailed support them asking if a ticket has been created / if I could exchange the watch, because it isn’t working correctly. No reply.
The only thing I know is that I’m not going to take this watch on holiday, because it’s useless to me without a working map of the region.

Hello Brad,
So, I 'm back from Chamonix and the map of this part of France was working fine from the first time (without the usual soft reset + calibrate compass).
Before starting UTMB, I have selected the gpx trace, start the race with custom trail activity and then locked the watch.
Maps of the 3 regions were available on the watch but with the 500 m display by default which is not always appropriate… Because I had locked the watch to prevent any stop of the watch, it was impossible to go to 250 m, 100 m > 50 m and backwoods, which is a pain!
Program “locked watch” should not prevent user moving from 500 m to 50 m !Having no indication on the map, like names of mountain passes, lakes, villages is also a major drawback !
Sadly, I have not been able to synchronize the result to my phone. 42h58 from Friday 6PM to Sunday 1PM.
Any reasons? > 3 days, too long, 3 maps, custom trail program, other…
And of course, other activities (bicycle ride to work) I did yesterday have been synchronized without any pb…Have a nice day
BR

@Ilya-Sul
Support emailed me today, asking me to reinstall Suunto App. They also want to know if the problem occurs with other maps that I downloaded. This is, of course, very easy to check on the watch… Guess I need to take a road trip now? Or scroll around aimlessly for a few hours?
Jokes aside, looks like the chat support agent didn’t create a ticket / escalate the issue for me, since I already did everything they asked of me more than once. Joy.
-
@laurent92m First, Congratulations on UTMB! If you cannot get the activity to sync try a tablet or different phone if available. If not you can try to delete and reinstall the app. What OS are you on iOS or Android. I synced a 34h 100 mile race but I definitely had issues syncing.
Agree that having names on maps is important. I and others I am sure have voiced this and it is an obvious issue. I hope that we see progress on this as well.

I’m with you guys on that point. Maps on the vertical are great and reactiv, but some friends of mine have garmin’s and I must admit that maps details and the way zoom works are also brilliant.
-
@Tieutieu I had an Epix2 for nine months purchasing one immediately after release. I found the maps were slow and often difficult to use on the fly. Even with less information selected the maps are quite crowded and slow to respond. I had issues with loaded routes that I could go into in detail if you wish. Newer hardware may work better but I was not happy with the maps.
Suunto’s maps are much easier to read and much, much more responsive. I would like to see names added but not at the cost of making the maps extremely slow. I imagine that something is being done her (my opinion only) and I am confident adding names, etc will be done so not to compromise the ability to use maps on the fly.

@Brad_Olwin Been using 7XSS for well over than 20 months now. Maps are done very well and work pretty good for me. Indeed, maps help me so much, they are one of the main reasons, among other things, why I bother buying Fenix. Nothing cluttered at all. In the mountains they are extremely useful for what I do. I even buy on day one of my purchase licensed maps, although one can find tons of free maps on the Internet.
I keep following this no-map thread, as I’m eagerly waiting to see this sorted out asap.
